What Species is The Doctor?

Time Lord or Gallifreyan?

I hardly feel worthy to ask myself this question being as I am a Doctor Who obsessive but here goes.

Well we know he's a Time Lord but is that how he was born or is his not a Gallifreyan by birth. Don't you have to graduate to become a Time Lord and earn yourself a TARDIS?

Well, he's certainly a Gallifreyan. But as for being a proper 'Time Lord'...didn't he funk his exams? He was never quite as clever as the Master, apparently (from what I remember between Pertwee & Delgado).
As for 'earning' a Tardis....he nicked an old one that was due to be scrapped! (Bless it...it's done well since!)

In 'The Ribos Operation', Romana mentions that he scraped through on the second attempt...so he did pass eventually.

And to think the only surviving Time Lord was one who just scraped through. The irony.

Wonder if
Spoiler
the Lord Dalton
will refer to this when they meet
Spoiler
sometime soon

"Youz thick, youz soo thick. Thiick like your mudblood mama"

"I'm not half-human..."

"Nooo course you're not....mutant..."

I've made him adopt a non-RP voice to get rid of the pompous image of the Time Lords of old.

Maybe he is a coward and hid somewhere, after all whenever something bad comes his way rather than confront it he runs

Didn't the McGann movie have him as half human?
Anyway I always assumed that Time Lords were an elite of the Galifreyan race.

The writer's guide for the New Adventures (not exactly canonical, but still interesting) had it that when Gallifreyans became Time Lords they were given nanites that rewrote their DNA after their first death, giving them two hearts and all the rest. So I reckon you could say that Time Lords are a species themselves, albeit an artificially created one.

I'd say it slightly unfair, even if an interesting point, to ever refer to a book\novel on Dr Who to try and base his species on unless it's a direct version of a tv serial version based on the original script rather than the broadcast version.

I wish I could fully recall watching the dvd of Invasion Of Time as I'm sure there are a few indications in that story?.

He lied, the ending to Season 4 retconned this to an extent - if he was half human, a part-human part-timelord biological metacrisis wouldn't be a problem, since half breeds could exist naturally. If he was half human he'd also be 75:25 not 50:50 since Donna's 100% human and he is supposedly 50% human,

Anyone else think that was RTD's gift to canon arguments around the whoniverse?

Didn't The Five Doctors introduce non-Time Lord Gallifreyans?

I accept all the arguments about the New Who canon but I can't accept that the 8th Doctor regenerated from a Half Human to a 100% Time Lord 9th Doctor. Call it a failing if you want but it doesn't make sense to me. It's perfectly logical to me that The Doctor sees himself as 100% Time Lord.

Also I'm not an expert but didn't the Doctor have a human mother?

That was for that story only though.....that hasn't been an issue for any other DW story......

And as this is DW...45 years...full of contradictions...because it is written by a thousand writers.....that line in the movie is no more canon than what Doc.2 said....it depends on the story and what the writers want us to see.....in the movie the writers wanted us (or the new American audience) to connect to the Doctor as a half human....in RTD era...they want us too see him as a pure Time Lord....simple....

Species: Gallifreyan

Rank: Timelord
(As in 'Last of the...')

hello, first post and all that...

soo by that logic, he could be the last of the Time Lords, but not the last of the Gallifreyans?

Makes me wonder if TD in the leaked pic could be some kind of teacher training the remaining Gallifreyans to be new Time Lords??

It's possible that the series could introduce Gallifreyans but I think it unlikely. Would feel like a bit of a cop out as well if they said 'He's the last of the timelord but oh didn't we mention he's not the last of the Gallifreyans." I think it would be a bad step for series if they went down that road.
