I'd go with 2002
Especially for debut albums...

Interpol's "Turn On The Bright Lights" was an amazing album, bought back that post-punk sound. Don't know why this band don't get as much attention as their peers

The Streets "Original Pirate Material" one of the best and most infectious British social commentary albums.. paved the way for artists like The Arctic Monkeys and Dizzee Rascal

The Libertines "Up The Bracket".... revitalized interest in British bands, without this album the new 'indie' revolution wouldn't have existed. paved the way for a lot of rubbish imitators but also alot of good bands.

2007 deserves a mention also with Radiohead, Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Kings Of Leon and M.I.A releasing cracking albums.

I think 2004. There was Morrissey's You are the Quarry and one of my favourites ever, The Killers' Hot Fuss. Actually I can't remember much else of 2004 so maybe not.

I would probably say 2004 and 2007 stick out the most because of Umbrella and Bleeding Love in 07 and 04 was Britneys year with some of her best hits ever like Toxic and Everytime.

2006-2007 for one reason: The release of Back To Black, as well as Mark Ronson's album Version.

I'd agree with 2001. The Strokes, Interpol, Mull Historical Society, OK Go (before they got pigeon holed with that youtube video), plus great albums for already established bands such as REM, Stereophonics and Radiohead.

That is of course if you can forget the charts during 2001, as they were abysmal, but there again, what else is new

I dont know I'd have to go with 2000 coz everything has got progressivley worse this decade as each year goes by.

At least in 2000 we got Mama's gun by Erykah Badu and Who is Jill Scott? Vol 1. by Jill Scott which were excellent songs.

Give me the 90's anyday.

I would have to go for either 2000 or 2001 and I must say I am very intrigued by the diverse tastes expressed in this thread so far.

One of my favourite albums was released in 2001 - 'Since I Left You' by the Avalanches. I've always been a sucker for music that has what I would class as random samples and that album is full of them. 'Since I Left You' was released a few months after a close family relative passed away suddenly and it bore a particularly poignant sentiment at the time. However, I thought the song itself was completely unique compared to quite a lot of the other things that I was listening to at the time.

I also liked quite a few of the singles released around 2001 including the stuff by Gorillaz, 'American Dream' by Jakatta, 'Starlight' by Supermen Lovers (bit of a guilty pleasure), 'Daydream in Blue' by I Monster, the excellent 'Buck Rogers' by Feeder and yet another guilty pleasure in Daft Punk's 'Digital Love.'

2000 wasn't a bad year for music in my opinion although on balance I prefer 2001. I still listen to quite a few singles from 2000 including 'Girls Like Us' by the B15 Project, 'Flowers' by Sweet Female Attitude, 'Pure Shores' by All Saints (quite liked the album they had out in 2000 with 'Black Coffee' etc on it) and of course, Madonna's 'Music.'

My thoughts exactly, for sheer number of good albums, 2005 is hard to beat. As well as your more well known suggestions, it was a brilliant year for indie/alternative fans like me with albums such as these:

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
M.I.A. - Arular
My Morning Jacket - Z
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Antony & the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
Animal Collective - Feels
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
The National - Alligator
The Decemberists - Picaresque
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Jamie Lidell - Multiply
Bonnie "Prince" Billy & Matt Sweeney - Superwolf
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock & Roll
Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain
Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs
Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike
Saul Williams - Saul Williams
Sigur Ros - Takk...
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Broadcast - Tender Buttons
Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires
Martha Wainwright - Martha Wainwright

That's alot of good music for one year!
