something to look forward to in these Who scarce days
found it just by chance

Tuesday 23 June 11.30am Radio 4:

On the Outside it Looked Like an Old Fashioned Police Box

Back in the days before VHS, let alone DVD, the Doctor Who novelisations were the only way a fan could commit the Time Lord's adventures to memory. With a child's big-budget imagination filling in for wobbly sets and monsters, the books became a bestselling phenomenon for publisher Target. Here, Mark Gatiss wallows in some paperback nostalgia as he pays tribute to such authors as Terrance Dicks, Malcolm Hulke and Philip Hinchcliffe - writers who taught many (thanks to the Who house style) the meaning of the words "capacious", "crotchety" and "bohemian", and ended up shaping a whole generation of young readers.

Am listening to the audio book of "Doctor Who and the Cybermen" (The Moonbase TV story) at the moment. Glorious.

Anneke Wills's accents have to be heard to be believed: the book has Cockney, Yorkshire, Scottish and French!

Am v much looking forward to hearing the Target programme, tomorrow.

Am listening as I type. What bliss. What luxury. Delight. Terrance Dicks talking about "a wheezing, groaning sound". Mark Gatiss and Russell T Davies talking about the excitement of buying the books: I can remember the thrill of seeing a new title on the shelf.

Gatiss has just used the word "himselves" to describe the many Doctors! And Caroline John is talking about "the changing face of Doctor Who"! Glory be!

Lovely, lovely, lovely.
