Am I right in thinking that based on this lottery system for the distribution of tickets that many people go on their own since it would be pot luck if you wanted to take a friend and they managed to get a ticket on the same date? I would love to go to a live show but have no one to take so have always felt it be 'sad' to go alone?

I think is is appalling that you can win a ticket and are still not guaranteed to see the show. I just couldn't financially afford to take that chance.

you apply and get a pair... (if you are successful of course).... but you won't know for sure until about a week before...

You would definitely get in if you are prepared to queue for hours. Those at the front of the queue are guaranteed to get in! On the few occasions when I've been lucky enough to go, we have taken folding stools and a picnic (and some wine!) and made sure we were there early enough to get in. Not so much fun when it's pouring with rain though!
At least it stops people who apply on a whim and don't even like the show very much! I'd gladly queue for hours to see it live.
I can understand queuing to get a better seat if seat allocation is on a first come first served basis, but I do think a ticket should guarantee you a seat as not everyone lives close enough to London to be able to queue for hours - they may have paid a lot in travel costs to see the show.
It would be much better if everyone who had a ticket was guaranteed a seat and others could, without a ticket, turn up on the off-chance that some people don't show up.
The BBC (and all the other agencies who supply tickets for tv shows) always make it clear that a ticket does not guarantee entry. They always issue more tickets than seats as so many people just don't bother to turn up. It seems that if the ticket is free, then people don't feel obliged to turn up. However, I would have thought that it was slightly different with Strictly as the tickets are like gold dust!!! I can't imagine anyone actually getting a ticket and then not turning up... Unless they're not a rabid fan and just applied for the hell of it and having got the tickets don't bother to use them. Which should be punishable by death IMHO when there are so many fans desperate to go.

In fairness I do feel a bit sorry for some of the celebs who basically have cameras pointed at them for the entire show, and don't dare do anything but smile and clap for fear that a yawn, smirk or rolling of eyes will make the papers and be deconstructed on all the forums for days!
In a way it annoys me more the celebs who want to be in the front row for the exposure, whereas Jill apparently wanted to watch the show unobserved.

yeh so would I. i'd be fully prepared to spend the whole day just sat there.
if any of us were lucky enough to go we'd have the advantage over everyone else after reading this thread because we'd know to go early.

i went a few times in series 3 before people really knew how to get tickets and before SCD was as popular as it is now. I've watched since the preview show and am just gutted that i didn't go to the pilot show as i was doing a course at the time. Big mistake as i'd have leanrt about bbc tickets for series one and two!

Yes, I went in series 3 before it had really taken off. The good old days.
What I would have given to go to series one let alone the pilot!
