O'Briens Sandwich Bars in Administration
Ambassador
23-06-2009
(news from last week but oculdn't see it discussed anywhere)

The British arm of franchise sandwich chain O'Briens has been placed into administration

The company said most of it's 109 British stores were struggling to pay rents after a huge drop in customers.

The company says it has no plans to place its Irish Division into administration and is confident that things can be turned around at the British stores but added that it was inevitable some stores will close.

The chain is expected to request a renegotiation of rents with landlords which will lead to a number of stores closing

While I feel sorry for the people who work for them, it's no great culinary loss to the nation is it?

I've never heard of them.

I remember Benjy's a few years ago, but they went the same way?

I've been into one once and found it to be very overpriced. Sorry to know that people will loose jobs but I'm not sure it was ever that popular??

They're definitely ridiculously over-priced for what you get so they wouldn't be a big loss.

I think we have/did have one in Croydon. I never went in as I always thought with that sort of fancy shop front, the sandwiches would be overpriced.

Yes there was one in croydon. When i used to go in one i found it no worse than say a subway. And way nicer than pre-packed sandwiches which you get in supermarkets which i hate with a passon.

I think we have one here, but I've never been in. I thought it was an independant sandwich bar/café, I didn't reaise it was part of a chain.
It's a shame that people will lose their jobs though if it's the one I'm thinking of it won't be a great loss, it's always empty, and in a weird location - away from the main shops and offices.

They're everywhere here in NI - they're ok but I rarely go - mainly due to them not listening & understanding that when I ask for a sandwich without onions, I don't want them anyway

The one good thing about a recession is that it tends to weed out some of the establishments that are uncompetitive and don't know what the phrase 'customer service' actually means.
