I always thought that new potatoes were cheaper this time of year and they put the sign up to let you know what you're going to get. If you don't like chips made out of new pots you know not to go in there

we dont put a sign up in my shop but i have seen it in other shops. We have already had the usual customers who only come in this time of year to see if we are on the new potatoes yet. I try to buy "old" ones for as long as my supplier has them. I have already placed my order for next week but doubled it just to make sure we get them for at least a week longer

Here's what I understand from Wikipedia regarding new and old potatoes. New potatoes, and some varieties sold as new potatoes, have thin, delicate skins and are particularly flavourful. If new potatoes are cured after harvesting, then the skins thicken and the potatoes become old potatoes, which are better for making chips with.
I've seen new potato signs in chippys in the past, but not recently. |
