No more storage available, there are no other files on my memory stick, so why am I getting this message

At a guess, the file is larger than 2GB.

Agreed, I had the very same problem, the total file size does also depend on what channel it was recorded from, I have fitted an hour programme from ITV1 on a 2 GB stick but not one from BBC1, a 90 min movie would be too large for a 2GB stick in any case.

Yes, a very rough average is 2GB per hour for SD, and 4GB for HD.

you don't necessarily need to format the stick if the files that you intend to transfer are smaller than 4Gb.

Hi all,

On this subject, I'm thinking of getting the Foxsat hdr and I've seen that you can transfer files onto memory stick etc can those files then be watched on a PC? Or will it only playback on the foxsat?

Thanks guys

Can be played back on a PC without any problems, except from files that are encrypted such as BBC HD

If you record BBC HD in non-Freesat mode, it is unencrypted.

For a "simple" FAT 32 Format :-

If you are using Windows on your PC, stick the USB drive into a USB slot on the PC, open up My Computer, right click on the drive & choose format; make sure the drop down is FAT32, not FAT.

If you want to go down the Ext3 route, use the link posted above.

Edit : I have just seen your last line edit. It has been reported that some USB sticks, just do not work with the HDR.

It could be that the file size is more then 4GB which wouldn't be transferable if your 8GB stick is formatted in FAT32 (which it may be) Best to re-format as savvy suggests. The Foxsat cannot tell you the file size but how long is it and from which channel was it recorded?

He's not getting that far, the HDR isn't recognising it.

But, I would try a reformat, and if it still doesn't recognise it, then put it down as one of those sticks that won't work with the HDR.

Well, at about 2GB per hour, it "may" be over 4GB, but that isn't what is causing your USB stick not to be recognised, see posts above.

It would also be possible to transfer it to a USB hard drive if you had one, 124mins could push the file size over 4GB though.

Yes agreed it could be down to the USB stick not be compatible, I have used Sony 2GB and 4GB and they have been fine.

We can but hope that the much discussed firmware update will bring us FTP* and all this USB madness can be consigned to the history books.

* File transfer protocol - for those who haven't used it is a method of transferring files over a network connection. Several of the HDRs cousin products from Humax in Europe have this enabled, for some reason they chose to disable it on the HDR.

That reminds me I need to run an ethernet cable around the room in anticipation but won't we be faced with the max 4GB problem? the PC will need a hard drive formatted in EXT2/3 to transfer the larger files.

No you won't NTFS is perfectly happy with large files, its just that the HDR doesn't like NTFS on USB devices.

Wikipedia states the max file size of NTFS as 17,592,185,978,880 bytes - 16 Terabytes.

You'll need the ethernet for iplayer anyhow so it won't be wasted, even if Humax don't see sense and re-enable FTP on the device.

I have been trying to use an 8 GB stick which I have formatted as FAT 32. The Foxsat recognises that the USB stick is there but File Manager has the green copy function greyed out.

Is this how we are defining ' just one of those incompatible sticks' or is there something else that I am missing.
