Dan the Van

Hi,

Robin Hood was moved to BBC2 with a start time of 19:00. As a result it has not recorded.

Naughty BBC.

I don't watch Wimbledon so how was I to know?

Surely the point of this is to work out why it didn't record. BBC metadata wrong or Humax problem?

It was moved to a different channel (BBC1 to BBC2).

As far as I know neither the freesat nor Sky EPGs/STBs are designed to cope with this.

That's quite bizarre. I would have thought it would have coped the same as when it looks for alternative instances on other channels.

i.e. I've had series links automatically uses there +1 channel (or a repeat on a sister channel) without any intervention from me if there has been a clash with its main channel. I would have thought the program moving channel would have been the exact same circumstances providing the metadata was correct.

I think the box can only cope with 'clash avoidance' because there are alternative schedules in the epg at the time of making a reservation. It's a different issue when programmes are moved to a different channel at short notice.

I understand what you say but programmes moving to different channels at fairly short notice isn't unusual and is something the box designers should have planned for.

Yet another deficiency in implementation like the programme deletion and power cut problems?

GC, I think you're probably right.

But, if the BBC had been clever enough when they switched the prog to BBC2, by making the Series CRID the same, but the Prog CRID different, it might have picked it up?

I'm not sure about this, to be honest, but based on what happens on Five & Fiver, with Neighbours, the schedule picks up each & every repeat on both channels because they don't code them correctly.

Of course, for this to even have the remotest chance of working, the EPG would have to have been updated before the T-15 window. I don't know at what short notice RH was switched?

I'm just thinking out loud

Rgds.

Those were my thoughts too savvy. As you say we don't know at what point the programme was rescheduled and possibly had it been outside the T-15 it may have worked seamlessly and we would have been none the wiser.

I was watching the tennis and there were flashes at the bottom of the screen to warn of the change. I can't be sure, but I think they were well outside the 15 minute window. If not, then the way the match was going should have made the need for a change apparent to the BBC well before then.

My question would be; why couldn't the tennis be shown on BBC2, it's not as if not everyone can get BBC2, those days are way gone. Can only assume it's to do with ratings.

Silly BBC.

I too, was watching the tennis. The first warning flash appeared at 18:45 when Robin Hood should have started on BBC1. The second warning came at 19:00 when RH started on BBC2.

I had RH set up to record on BBC1 in SD (belt & braces in case of a problem with tonight's HD version), but with a single recording and pre- and post-padding. My 18:45 BBC1 recording started as expected. I went into the Guide to set up BBC2 and there were two instances of RH, the 18:45-19:30 BBC1 version and also the 19:00-19:45 BBC2 version.

Perhaps if the BBC had cancelled RH off the BBC1 EPG and then set up the BBC2 version, the Humax may have coped with Series Linked recordings?

BTW, if like me, you are planning to record the HD version of 'On Thin Ice' tomorrow night, be aware that BBC HD may be still carrying the Andy Murray match, as he is 3rd up on court and may not get started until after 6pm.

I can only speak for myself...
On my box the EPG was clearly still showing Robin Hood was playing on BBC1 but the picture was quite obviously Wimbledon.

I'm not sure Humax can be held responsible for that one...

Just before The program’ Robin Hood’ was due to start, BBC1 were showing a continuous running banner at the bottom of the picture, reminding/advising viewers
that ‘Robin Hood’ was now being shown on BBC2. This was apparently due to overrun on the previous tennis match and the late beginning of the Andy Murray Match.
Obviously this was of no benefit to those who were away and had set their PVR, but I’m sure it was the best that could be done under the circumstances.
No amount of ‘electronic manipulation’ could have coped with that.

Didn't the BBC change the schedual for two channels BBC1 and BBC2? I thought BBC2 was listed to show tennis until 20:00.

So why change anything, they could have just said. To continue watching this match please tune over to BBC2, it's been done before.

If they had updated the schedules outside of the 15 minute window before it started and also included the correct series CRID and program CRID (or maybe a different one as soemone else stated) it probably would have recorded.

Over on the Freeview forums what was noted that whilst the BBC updated the EPG for BBC 2 to relfect the BBC1 programs being moved over they left the EPG for BBC1 also showing the original scheduled programs. This is what they reckon caused the Freeview PVR's to fail and if they did a similar thing with the Freesat EPG this would have also caused a failure.

Why oh why (in my best points of view voice) do they think we are incapable of changing channels. Again as I type this the BBC 1 and BBC 2 schedules have all been messed up again when they could have just run it as scheduled on BBC 2 and then adjusted the BBC 2 schedule as necessary for the overrun.

As a footnote to my earlier post (#15) the HD 'On Thin Ice' programme followed the ending of the Andy Murray match at 22:45. The Guide for Channel 108 was showing that 'On Thin Ice' was due to start at 23:00. Useless, really! Fortunately, I kicked off a manual recording just as it started.
