Absolutely amazing bands-I am only 17 yet I've grown up on songs such as Night Boat To Cairo, Ghost Town, House of Fun, You're Wondering Now.

Anyway, in that genre, for that type of music, do you think anything since, or anything around at the moment can compare?

Watching both at Glastonbury has just made me think about this, very random I know.

Two of my favourite groups mentioned in the thread title. If you like those, I would also recommend The Selecter as well. Try On The Radio or Missing Words.

As for modern groups, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish I'd say were on a similar par.

The Two Tone groups were fantastic got every release ever made on vinyl by that label. Watching Madness just now at Glastonbury on the red button atmosphere with the crowd is fantastic with the young and old singing along.

Hi, glad you like them, Great bands.

I don't think much compares to that ska revival.
Some may say the next revival of Ska which came a bit later with many American Ska bands.
But for me it wasn't the same vibe at all.

Personally I think that the closest thing I could compare it to is some of the Dubstep which has come out over the past couple of years. Not all of it because Dubstep can have all sorts of shades and colours, but some of it has had a kind of vibe which reminds me of some early 80s Ska.

Love RBF and have liked the Bosstones tracks i've heard but I wouldn't put them in the same bracket as Madness or The Specials.

I sometimes get lost in the genres they are put into but I think RBF are Third-Wave Ska. Definately more rock based and do alot of comic tracks and genre parody. One of my fave bands. Was great to see them earlier this year.

Even the rough ones towards the end?
And did you always get the black and white paper labels?

The scariest gig I've ever been to was Madness I was dragged there against my will and it was horrible never seen so many fat bald sweaty men in one building in my whole life lol. I don't think theres ever gonna be a band that compares to Madness I don't think the music industry is in a place where it would accept another band like them it seems to be really bad pop/dance tracks that fill the charts these days

Hi,

If you haven't seen it already, I recommend trying to get hold of a copy of the 1981 film "Dance Craze".
Great live footage of all the 2-tone bands from back in the day.

Ska Mania was released a couple of months back. It's not just two-tone it ranges from the classic 50+ to modern bands/covers.

^ I bought myself, I mean my children bought me that for Fathers Day degsy.....bit of an education for me who only really knew the late 70's bands who popularised ska.....'

I liked that 'he got barbwire in his underpants' one....

I got it about a month ago but have only listened to the first CD. There's some classics on there that i've heard in other places e.g. Liquidator from football matches.

There's also the classic Monkey Man by The Maytals, although I do still prefer the RBF cover

Yeah, 'Monkey Man's' definitely got the old X-factor alright.....one of those if you play it in your car on the way to work you're 'ay-ay-aying' round the office all day....

Which is met with universal approval, obviously

Get yourself a good singles collection by The Beat. Also, as mentioned above, Toots & The Maytals for absolutely joyous, uplifting music.

Was also going to suggest The Beat, they were by far my favourite 2 tone/ska band. You can get a 37 track compilation of stuff by them for less than a fiver on amazon.

To be fair, at least half the baldies were probably actually skinheads.

Aye, love them. Wine & Grine/Stand Down Margaret is a personal favourite of mine...for political reasons.

Going to see the Specials in November

Enjoyed them both but thought 'the Specials' had the edge.

Hated the cringe making bit during 'Nightboat to Cairo' where Madness's kids all came out .. and one of them grabbed the mic and tried a bit of self promotion .. I'm guessing it was Sugg's daughter promoting her band .. that was a bit naff .. but the rest was excellent.

I thought the kids coming out at the end was sweet - each to their own - although yes, the gobby daughter was rather risible
