How are you all managing to keep your pets cool in this hot weather ?

My two are in front of an electric fan after a cooling shower.

My little one has been a bit more lethargic than usual so I'm just keeping her water topped up. She's keeping out of the sun and finding the coolest spots to sleep etc..

It must be horrid though, I may see if she'll have a little 'paddle' in some cold water later - I'll fill the bath up a wee bit, she likes that normally anyway but it might be nice for her whilst it's so hot

He get's to swim in the river
the fan is on also
sulphur in his water
and I basically just leave him to do what he wants- usually flop out on the coolest part of the floor he can find

Night times are tough though, although windows are open and fan is on he still doesn't settle most of the night.

My 2 don't know what to do with themselves in this heat. I was sitting out in the sun this morning and they insisted on sitting in the sun with me, despite the fact there was still quite a bit of shade in the garden. I've come inside now as it is too hot and thankfully they have followed me in and have had a drink and are now flopped on the the floor with the fan on. It's a shame you can't unzip their fur coats for them so they can cool down quicker

I keep a bottle of water in the freezer which I wrap in a tea towel for my bunny to lie against.

Putting ice cubes in the water is a good idea because it not only brings the temperature of the water down, it means it doesnt heat up so quick.

Someone I know used to put dog treats in ice cube trays, and then pour water in to freeze around it. Then they have a game of getting all the ice off to get the treat.

basically?

nothing, there's always water around, windows are open
we just don't play with jake as much

not much we can do with the pigs/rabbits as anything with water means they'll be going back into their hutches damp
they just get let out & have plenty of concrete to lay on

Ice cubes in the dogs water bowls keeps the water chilled nicely. My only complaint is they insist in hogging the breeze of my fan!
The rabbits seem to kep cool lying in the long grass in the shaded areas of the garden.

We had a lovely slow, mooching walk yesterday (myself & 2 friends & 6 dogs between us) through a shady forest with a bubbling stream that every so often opened out into deeper ponds. The dogs were jumping in & out of the water, chasing sticks & tennis balls & generally having a lovely time. We sat by the stream & dabbled our toes in the water & had a picnic, then wandered back to our cars which were parked in shade, so were not too hot. All in all, a lovely day out.

Today ~ yuk! Back to work, then a fire drill, then road works started outside, then my desk fan packed up. I wished I'd stayed in bed today!

My dogs are loving the sun!! Eddie actively seeks out the sunniest spots in the garden, and follows the sun around I give Doogle ice cubes to crunch on - unfortunately, Eddie buries his, and then can't work out where they've gone

Watch the sun burn, put cream on the end of their ears if they have light skin. Pets skin burns in the sun too, and they are just as prone to Skin Cancer as we.

Very true one of ours used to be a sun lover and he ended up burning the top of his nose badly - took absolutely ages to heal !

I've been walking my dogs along the river in the evenings when it's hot as they both love the water. But there's no shade for me & my friends so it's really hot for us. I'm not keen on swimming or paddling in the river because of currents, sand flies (that make a bee line for me~) & the cleanliness of the river.

So last night I decided to bite the bullet & take the dogs to the beach so that I could have a dip in the sea as well. Although the water was quite cold, it was ok once I got used to it. I swam out with the dogs following me, then turned to swim back but we all got tangled up together ~ result was that I've now got claw marks from the dogs all down one side of me ~ big red welts that stung like anything in the salt water!

Unfortunately one of my friend's dogs then rolled in a rotting fish ~ the smell was unbearable & I felt very sorry for my friend having to put up with that stink in the car home. Other than that the dogs had a lovely time but I think we'll be going back to the river this evening!

My cats are loving the heat, especially the very warm & humid evenings & they are out playing until gone midnight.

My two dogs are getting earlier walks in the morning when it's cooler, and later in the day, then a dip in the sea before we leave. I picked up a cheap pool so they paddle now and again but they won't lie down in it yet. We have a ceiling fan in the living room, so they lie underneath and I use a small spray bottle to wet them underneath. Luckily our hose has a mist setting which is like a very fine rain, really useful!

I may try the treats in ice cubes too as that sounds just up our street.

Nothing really. She goes out for her walks early in the morning and later at night as it is, she's not fond of being in water and if I put suncream on her, she'd end up eating it all off

She goes outside to lie in the sun, then comes in to the cool end of the house when she gets too hot and lies there. This goes on all day. She's not even drinking that much more water, but seems happy enough within herself so we just leave her to it.

i put an extra bowl down for our dog loki with some ice in it, and he happily munches, licks and chases that! the kitten has just had a bath so she's cooled down nicely!

I keep the cats water in the fridge in a 1L bottle, and put the picnic freezer blocks under the water bowl. They have 3 bowls of water and they all prefer the freeser pack one at the moment.

One of my cats is laying in the sun, another is curled up in a plastic carrier bag, one is in the shade on the window sill, and the last one is asleep on the stairs (funnily enough its the same stair my dog used to sleep on).

They are free to sleep on the cold tile floor, but nobody wants to. They do like to sleep in the bath (tin one), bathroom sink, and kitchen sink and drainer too.

We have a bit of an advantage as because asI can't' sit in the sun we have plenty of shadey areas outside, icluding two hug umbrellas, but I've also put out extra bowls of cold water down for my two, and keep changing them reguarly so they don't get warm, also I've got a fan on they can lay beside if they want to, and all the doors and windows in the house are open.
My bedroom is pretty cool, so my cat, Rosie, swaps between laying in the shade in the garden, or laying on my bed, when that gets too hot for her
My dog Danny tends to follow me around, even if it means sitting where its hot, but its not too bad in here.

I'm also getting up extra early and making sure Danny gets his walk before it gets too hot, and we are saving his longer afternoon walk until the evening when its cooled down a bit

Yesterday OH was at home with the dogs & was catching up on chores like cutting the grass. After he finisished he noticed that Barney was missing. He searched house & garden & he eventually found our very resourceful dog fast asleep on the cool concrete garage floor! The garage door is rarely left open but was open yesterday to get the lawn mower out & Barney took advantage immediately.

We've not had quite such hot weather up here as some of you are getting south of the border, (how the hell do you cope with 30+ degrees! ) but the dog's been suffering all the same.

Today's been the worst day so far and we've been giving him plenty of ice in his water and regular sprays with the hose. I bought a big fan to keep him cool too, but he's terrified of it and won't even go into the living room where we have it set up. His daytime walks have come to an end for now and he's just been getting out for a run first thing in the morning and at around 10 at night, but even then it's still been pretty hot and he can't really be bothered.
