Why do pets need names?

They will respond to anything through training, so numbers would do, surely? First pet, refer to it as "1", it will learn. Second pet "2" etc.

You could do the same with your children.

Yes you could call them 1 and 2 etc but then that would just be their name surely so you haven't achieved much just called them by another name

"They" don't need names. We need to give them names

It's nice to give them a name - although we never, ever call out kitty by her actual name and all she answers to is food (sometimes even food doesn't work actually )

That's usually the case. Cody thinks her name is 'Sis' as in 'what's this'

And Paul is always called Polly or Princess

Ours already had a name when we got her, and kind of responded to it, so we thought it was best for her to just continue it

She does end up getting called all sorts, though, and responds quite happily to all of those - stinkerton, gorgeous and stinkerbell being the main three ( I sense a theme...)

I bought a tortoise when I was 12, and it was the week of the launch of Apollo13, so he was called 'Apollo'.

Somehow the name didn't seem right, and after a while he was just referred to as ' the tortoise' and that is the way it has stayed.

He's still going strong, and we'll have had him 40 years next April.

Wow that's brilliant. A friend of mine had one that was about 35 and I know they can live to a great age, I used to have a couple called Yogi and Boo Boo when I was a kid. I know I gave Yogi away because he was vicious, used to bite me, but can't remember what happened to Boo Boo.

OP: did you watch Neighbours by any chance?

"Cat! Cat! Come here Cat!".

I genuinely think 'Cat' and 'Kitty' are two lovely names for cats but '1' and '2' would be pushing it a bit far.

If you wanted, you could give an animal an inappropriate number as a name, similar to the episode of Seinfeld where George suggested 'Seven' would be a good name for his first-born child if he ever had children.

My old cat was called Cat

Ceefer and Deefer seem to popular names for cats and dogs.

when we got our Border Collie, the second film in the "First Blood" series was out. It was my favourite film at the time (I was about 20), so I called her "Rambo" !
My girlfriend at the time (now my wife) shortened her name to "Bobo" !
