JVC HR-S6700 S-VHS

Hello!

I'm on the look for a new video recorder and I have come across the JVC HR-S6700 S-VHS video recorder. One of the features is that it has satellite control/video+ deluxe. Could someone answer a couple of questions that a stupid shop employee couldn't answer! Thanks.

1) Can this JVC model control the digital Sky? Or in other words, can it handle the 3-digit code for changing the Sky channels? I.e. SkyOne = 106.

2) Because this model is Super VHS, it has better picture difinition with ordinary VHS tapes, can other video recorders, without S-VHS, play what has been recorded on this JVC S-VHS? Ooh, and how much are S-VHS tapes?

Thanks again for any help/advices.

I have a similar JVC-SVHS VCR. Not sure if it's quite the same model though.
It does has a record link function, which starts recording when it detects a video input on the SCART socket. Therefore you do NOT need to set the timer on the VCR, just the timer on the digital terestrial/satalite box. Works well.
However I have seen VCR's (my Toshiba did it) that can send IR codes to change channels on boxes. Don't know if they work with Sky, though (sorry).
If you record SVHS on an S-VHS tape you will only get B&W playback on non-SVHS VCR's (even if you connect to SVHS equipment). However all SVHS VCR's will record standard VHS onto VHS tapes, which will work okay however you play back.
SVHS tapes are about twice the price of VHS in most shops.

I'm not sure about the sattelite control. I got the JVS HRS 6722. It had all the features of the 6700 but was only £179. Currys and Dixons are the only stockists. Now that the personal planner has been released by sky you probably don't need the Sat control.
As for SVhs tapes, they cost about £5 each. The JVC video allows you to record in SVhs ET mode. Using normal VHS tapes you can record in near SVHS quality. You can only play back on videos with SVhs ET or Quasi playback features.
The video is exceptional for the price. Go for it you wont be dissapointed.

Got the 6722 also and its superb. I was a little miffed at first because the sat box control wouldn't work with my Sky unit (Grundig). But with the new program planner you don't really need it.
Shez316, impessed with S-VHS as I am, what are your thoughts on the ET mode? I've used the E-HG tapes as recommended and there's little improvement over normal VHS.

The ET mode is only marginally better than VHS. I don't know about E- High grade tapes. Use the official JVC SVHS tapes. They cost £10 for a pack of 2 and come in gold wrappers. They have frosted plastic sleeves. You get exceptional quality with these SVHS tapes.
