Bulmers Pear Cider
not_orange

I always understood that cider was made from apples?

Isn't pear bubbly called Perry?

So shouldn't Bulmers be in trouble with trading standards

That's what I thought.

Also, it sounds disgusting. I'm not keen on pears.

You can't beat a nice pear.

Nope. It's a cider made of strawberries.

I've also had iced cider which is very strong, expensive and extremely sweet.

I've had Belgian strawberry beer (called Fruli) - it's absolutely delicious, and my favourite boozy drink!

Nah, it's just a way for them to appeal to the younger generation who like cider and may not know what perry is.

No trading standards issue, it's just a case of a name.

A Screwdriver cocktail is vodka and orange juice, but you don't get into trouble for asking for vodka and orange at the bar.

As a previous poster said the target market probably wouldn't have a clue what "perry" was (apart from a character from the Harry Enfield show) so Bulmers are just rebranding the drink.

That being said I've yet to meet anyone who has tried it yet.

I also think that the name Perry these days has associations with naffness. Apologies to any people called Perry out there, but as a name it's not exactly sexy. Therefore "Pear Cider" probably sounds a bit more sophisticated.

That Kopparbergs stuff (which I buy in cases from IKEA) is rather deadly

Drink that like its bloody pop from lunchtime and by 10pm, the 2nd case is gone and I'm....jolly

There are some lovely fruit beers being produced in that part of the world. RateBeer will give you a list of all the best ones.

Industrial ciders and perries are always very bland. Try some of the smaller producers.

The Pear Cider definition may have been updated if Magners/Bulmers etc. are claiming that their pear cider is made only using pears. It means that technically it is a perry.

Perry is solely made using pears. I believe they are a special variety and not meat for eating.

According to Oz & James Drink To Britain:
Pear cider is made with apples and flavoured with pears.
There are not enough pears available to produce perry at the same scale as cider.

I was told by somebody in the cider making industry that it is purely a marketing ploy, apparently pear Cider is infact Perry, but Perry is traditionally considered a "ladies" drink, so in order to appeal to young men, they are calling it "Pear Cider".

It seems some tradional cider makers are not impressed by this, and are seeking ways to stop them doing it

Types of Perry pears include...

Blakeney Red, Butt, Gin, Barnet, Red Horse, Moorcroft / Malvern Hills, Red Longdon, White Longdon, Oldfield, Rock and Huffcap..

I doubt Bulmer's Pear Cider contains a single variety of Perry Pear, though, as it's too sickly sweet.

True Perry has a very subtle, slightly dry flavour and is nothing like the mass produced stuff sold in pubs. But then proper cider has virtually nothing in common with the mass market product either.

Try a proper Perry then comment.

At least something that has been near a pear whilst being made.
