Supermarket delivery substitutions
I got a delivere of accepting the delivery (I shall learn from that) and I'm being massively grumpy about their subtitutions (which silly husband accepted "Oooh they look alright." he tells me clueslessly).
I HAD ordered a 1kg bag of chicken breast fillets and was given a bag of 8 reconstituted chicken burger things in batter! How am I supposed to make curry, BBQ chicken melt, chicken stew (my meal plan for this week) with THAT? I also ordered 4 lovely lamb steaks and was given...4 quarterpounder burgers! So now I have my freezer full of food I do not like, though hubby is happy as it's more junk food that he will be forced to eat. This is the second time it's happened. The last time the delivery driver accidently gave us the wrong bag of frozen food. So again instead of the ingredients to make nice meals I was stuck with 6 ready meals that i didn't like, taking up the space in my freezer. Again, hubby ate most of them happily. I have no real point here, ther than to have a moan and wonder if it is a computer or a person who choses the subsitutes and if they have any sense? |

Use Ocado - they text you beforehand to let you know if any of your items are not in stock or are being substituted.
If we ever use Sainsbury's I don't care much for the driver who always seems in a massive hurry, I will make them wait while I check all subs carefully and hand back what I don't approve. |

I know some people say they don't have the time to do a shop, but it really is the only way to get exactly what you want. Anyway, I prefer to pick my own meat, fruit, veg etc.

I prefer to do my own shop but due to ill health, living on the 3rd floor and no car it's very difficult for me to manage a lot of the time.
I know some folk have no choice in the matter, unfortunately as long as there are dimwits in stores that think battered chicken thingies are an acceptable substitute for fresh chicken this sort of thing will carry on happening. Is there an option for no substitutions? Might be worth doing that to be on the safe side and then get someone you trust to pop out for you and get what the supermarket hasn't got?

The one thing I do like about deliveries is it helps me spend a set amount. I can fill up the basket, look at how much it comes to, faint, and take some of the stuff out. If shopping in person, it's often the shock total after everything's been rung through that does me in. LOL Clearly I am a sucker for promotional advertising. |

Who did you order from? I've used Asda in the past and they were very good on substitutions.
I guess the only way is to make them wait while you fully check it all! Annoying but for the ease of having it delivered it's not so bad

If you use Tesco, there should be a page near the checkout where you can choose which items you wouldn't mind a substitute for, and which ones you don't want substituted. I think you can even write a little note on it if you can think of a suitable alternative in advance like "if no strawberry, chocolate flavour instead"
I've not ordered from them in ages, hopefully they still do this

And no milk at all when the particular size/type/label of milk ordered wasn't in stock. I had to hobble round to the not-so-local shop before I could have a cuppa. I also found that they would deliver produce that was very close to its sell by and use by dates, so that my week's shop would need using up within 3 days. In the end I switched to Tesco and Ocado, which were both much better. |

I also have had to complain several times about use by dates on items delivered, and now carefully check all perishables. My fiance refuses to even answer the door to the delivery drivers now, since one of them, in passing, told me that god had told him a plague was coming soon to wipe out mankind

I think that this might vary by store. When I was on crutches following an accident, I used to order from Asda and I swear that they must've used the sixth form lads that work for them rather than the mature women who're used to doing the grocery shopping for their own family.

Everything we have been delivered has been well in date, in fact the use by dates were better than they normally are when I buy in store! |

Yeah I've had some pretty crazy subs, but agree the most annoying thing is when they don't give any sub at all when a particular type of water or whatever is out of stock. I refuse to believe the whole store is out of all water.

It's crazy.
No fresh ginger in stock so they sent me a starter motor for a mark2 escort. I also no longer accept substitutes unless my car won't start. |

The problem with substitutions is that you need to write one for every product you need and run the risk of the substitute not being available too. If you don't accept substitutes you run the risk of not getting a proportion of your shopping. If you have no local shops you may be relying on your home delivery. The other problem is Tesco have a habit of giving you higher priced substitutes you have to pay in full for. Especially annoying when you only ordered the original item because it was on offer. For us its Tesco or nothing since Iceland stopped doing it. |

We had the same with potatoes and bananas. No other potatoes in the whole store?

Had a good one today, we ordered a box of Pinot Grigio(
) and they sent a bottle!Re the higher priced substitutions, presumably you don't have to accept them? Tis annoying though, quite often we've ordered a large joint for Sunday and they've sent a small one usually a more expensive cut. Once they sent the wrong one without highlighting it a a substitution, so we accepted it without realising, cost more per pound and we had to go out and get more. If anything like that happens though, I email Sainsburys and usually get a £5 money off voucher. |

I had a funny substitution a while ago - serves me right for accepting it but I was in a pickle in the kitchen - instead of capers I got pickled green peppercorns! Which I like so I didn't mind too much but seriously - they may look alike but that's about all you can say!
Other than that, I've been quite happy with Tesco's substitutions except for one time when instead of a bottle of champagne on special offer they gave me a bottle of the cheapest white wine in the shop. That went back pretty swiftly

Anyone any idea how I e mail asda? Been telephoning a number for which I have been charged a small fortune (local rate but on my mobile it is classed as a premium rate number!)
No e mail address on their site. Thanks |

When you shop yourself you get the nicest fresh produce.
When you shop online you get the nearest fresh produce. |
