Tesco's Discount Brands

Are they as ghastly as ASDA's regular own brand, or have they just relabelled their regular own brand products in less fussy packaging?

Didn't buy any, but noticed 2L milk for 75p today. Considering the amount of milk they get through, Vs a reasonably steady demand it can't be any different to the regular milk, can it?

I think it depends what you get. Recently I have been buying Smartprice Nice buscuits and Smartprice Part Baked Baguettes and they have been fine. No disernable difference from the supermarket regular brand or even other brands (in the baguettes anyway).

Last year Tesco did rebrand some of their value range. They just gave different names to stuff to make it seem more homely brands rather than just Tesco cheap as chips.

I used to buy Tesco own brand jam (NOT Value jam) and that's now one of the Discount Brands.

As far as you can tell is it exactly the same stuff? Is it any cheaper?

The discount brand salted peanuts definitely taste different to the Tesco own brand peanuts, they totally lack flavour. I can't compare to the Tesco Value ones though as I've never had those.

The fresh pasta tastes okay though.

Some people say that it's all just the same. However I'll stick with Annie Wilkse's maxim from Misery, that you get what you pay for!

Tesco Value facewipes are really good, just as good as Johnsons/Simple in my opinion, and only about 50p. I like the Value biscuits and trifles/cakes as well. And it is true that discount brands are often as good as more expensive brands, its just a bit hit and miss sometimes.

Although if you're talking about the different 'discount retailer' brands that are in Tescos at the moment, the ones I've tried haven't been very nice. Especially one, which I can't remember the name of, but they sell cheese and margarine - both of which were disgusting.

I don't buy it anymore so I couldn't say if it's exactly the same or not. However, the price when I looked, was exactly the same as the previously own-branded version (Value is/was much cheaper).

Can't compare to Asda but generally the Tesco discount brands seem to be lower-quality versions of their own-brand products. I tried a few after they were introduced and found them to be unpleasant (so much so I binned a whole meal - that was their fresh pesto, used to like the own-brand version). I would imagine they're lower quality that the Value branded stuff - the idea behind the discount brands seems to be so that Tesco can produce crap without putting their name on it and damaging the Tesco brand.

Tesco have really confused the market here. It used to be Value < Tesco < Finest but now you have some pseduo-brand in between Value and Tesco - though, I accept that some have just been re-labelled.

I'll try something from the value range once (apart from fresh meat, beer and cheese - I do have some minimum standards). Some are perfectly acceptable, others are terrible. The discount/value brand cereals are awful but the Tesco label ones are fine.

There are very few things I buy with a non-supermarket brand label. Heinz Ketchup, HP Brown sauce and saving stuff is about the limit of it.

They're trying to take on Aldi and Lidl but the "Discount Brands" products are mostly inferior to their German competitors. For example lemonade: Tesco Discount Brand and Lidl Premium lemonade are the same price yet the Lidl one contains the same amount of real lemon juice as Schweppes while the Tesco one contains none.

Never tried any - don't like the packaging. Loud orange...yellow...brown...yuck! So uninviting.

That website looks rather complicated to me; it seems to be about food allergies/intolerances. I might have got the wrong end of the stick though

All I could see was a page for each supermarket which listed "advantages" and "disadvantages"; I was expecting to see reviews/ratings of products

Yes, I saw that - and in the first column it says "nuts" which presumably is to let anyone with a nut allergy to be aware. Ahhhh....just noticed the 4th column!!

Many discount brands say they are produced for Tesco on the back.

Anyway, the discounter 3-ply tissues (Springforce) are just as good as more expensive ones and the discounter orange juice and bacon taste just as good or better than the own brands.
