Seems to be a bit talk about pop going to the wall in 2004. What do you guys reckon? Is pops death overhyped? And what will dominate in 2004 instead, if it does happen? R&B? Rock? Dance hall? Something else? Or maybe just pop with a more R&B or rock flavour?

If you mean production line pop acts, then I hope there will be less of them, not just this year but for the rest of time.

Long overdue in my opinion.
I don't think pop will die, there will always be a market for it. Instead I think there will be a cull of talentless puppets.

I do hope the manufactured stuff dies. So many people are bored with the music at the moment. There have been very few decent songs relased one could classic.

There has also been bands popping in and being stars one minute and forgotten the next. There doesn't seem to be a singer/band that is able to last a 10 years.

I am also fed up with all the songs being copies. I couldn't believe Westlife released Mandy (by Barry Manilow ), I thought it was a joke at first and then an either bigger joke when it went to No1.

Well I kinda meant more a serious change in musical popularity. I'd bet if there is a shift towards RnB, or whatever, Mr Fuller and Mr Cowell and whoever else, will just create bands in the same way, but with a different musical style.

I'm not sure if theres a massive demand by the general record buying public for "real" bands. Personally I'm not bothered how a band is created, if the end product is good, surely it's the music that counts. And there already is prenty of "real" bands out there, and most of them aren't coming up with the musical classics either. Seems like a load of romantic nonsense to me.

There might be more of demand by the public for live singing in the future, which I'm certainly not against, and which if does happen, I think would be ironically prompted more than anything by the much maligned PopIdol.

But what do you define 'pop' music as?

Personally I define it as any music that is popular, not restricting it to any specific genre or number of bands/singers.

Yeah, know what you mean, theres kinda two definitions of pop it seems these days, your definition, and the one I kinda mean. Which is...well...you know...that sound, a sound that isn't strongly anything, easy on the ear (cheeky girls excluded ), not too challenging. Still kind of a broad church that can have dance influences, rock influences, etc, but nothing to strongly defined. I think that's the more popular definition these days, rightly or wrongly.

There will still be plenty of pop, and a lot of the production line stuff will continue.

I can say that because of how the record companies operate, especially these days. They just want a quick return and the "manufactured" acts provide them with it.

I have got nothing against pop music, some of our greatest artists have been pop. I like all types of music except cowboy !

But what I do dislike is groups/singers releasing old songs that is continually being rehyped reformatted. Also factory type music that has just come off the conveyour belt from places such as Simon Fuller that has got no personality or individually.

I would like to see someone emerge from the pop world, rock world etc I don't care which gendre who has talent, who will make a song which is lasting and I can say that person or persons are brilliant. If a day comes and if I ever have children, they may also listen to that person and marvel at there songs like I do to some of the groups/singers my parents listened to when they were younger. Except at the moment a lot of singers are made up by companies and when someone like Simon Fuller gets fed up with them or they are passed there sale by date they put in the bin and forgotten about. I would like that trend to be stopped.

There is nothing better than seeing a new talent be born, watch the talent emerge and progress and know that person or persons will be around for a long time.

I think we need some pop/rock type music, there has been very little of that around since the turn of the decade.
Way too much r'n'b stuff around or urban.

There are still bands doing it, but it doesn't get playlisted as much these days so doesn't chart highly if at all.

I know it's hard, but it is sometimes rewarding if you look for the music out there that isn't necessarily getting into the charts. It doesn't mean it's not good, just that it's maybe not cool enough for DJs to play it.

Pop will not die as it just stands for whats "popular".

Music is about personal choice thank God. We can go out and buy what we want to listen to. If you don't like the pop idol stuff or some of the singles that get put out you don't have to buy them do you?

I don't really buy singles, and don't necessarily buy what's in the Top 20 Album chart either. I take home what i want to personally listen to. Chart positions are only of interest to record companies, who can then hire and fire at what makes them quick money.

I prefer something a bit more consistent, that will hopefully be around for a while. Which isn't easy. Cos they keep whipping them out from under our noses.

My son only buys dance albums. He never buys singles. He takes no notice of the charts whatsoever.
