Anyone heard of these? Got a letter today advertising it, but no price details. Goes in-store at Panasonic.

Website - www.hdeverything.co.uk

You can use it as a Blu Ray Player and a Freesat + Receiver plus more.

2 versions of it:

DMR-BS850 - 500GB Storage
DMR-BS750 - 250GB Storage.

Does anyone have one?

Hi all,
Please be patient with a newbie.
However, I have a Panasonic DMR-BS850 and can confirm that it does exactly what it says on the tin. Pictures are generally great and- on BBC HD - Awesome!
Up to now, I am delighted.
Brian.

Welcome to the Forum!

Your posting is most welcome as not many folks on here have the DMR-BS850 . We will look forward to your future contributions to see how it compares with the Humax HDR.

Amazon do it for £850 and one person has fed back a review.

In some reviews I think it mentioned that ITV had blocked it from making a blu-ray from their wide range of HD content.

Also of course it is a lot of cash for something which will no doubt be superceeded in less than 12 months...

Indeed, I think ITV still have the "never copy" flag set, whereas BBC HD have "copy once" set. So you won't be able to archive anything from ITV HD at the moment, which is a bit annoying for the owners considering they do every now and then show HD films on there.

Weird that ITV are happy to transmit their HD content completely unencrypted across the whole of Europe, enabling anyone to make a perfect digital copy of it, but they won't let you record it using official hardware supported by their own platform.

Hi,
I paid £899 with free next day delivery for mine. I have not yet tried it, but I am sure you are right about not being able to copy ITV HD. You should be able to copy to standard DVD, of course, but what is the point? However, I now have a freesat recorder, which I wanted, and it does a few other tricks too. Incidentally, I have found BD-R discs for about £2.50 each.

With the new device can one:

1 Record to Blu Ray from a source external to the Panasonic box ie from say a Sky HD box.

2. Add an additional program to a Blu Ray disk or does one have to record all the programs in one session and close off (finalise - perhaps) the disk before replaying it.

Thanks for any info

I got the Panasonic from:
http://www.discounttv.co.uk/index.ht...20d793141eaa1b
and the discs from:
http://www.discworlduk.co.uk/Blu-Ray...p-1-c-533.html
and I notice the price has dropped again - now under £20 for 10 discs.

Yes, now £832.01 at Amazon with free delivery....

Re the question can it record from Sky+ HD?

I assume the answer would be no as I don't think it has an HDMI input just output.

Plus of course the primitive Sky+ HD only outputs 5.1 via optical so if it did have a HCMI inyou would only get stereo.

I have taken the plunge and purchased one of these, got it from my local Panasonic Store in Guildford. They currently have an offer on whereby you take an Video Recorder/DVD Player and trade it in for a 10% discount they are also offering 12 months interest free credit.

Comparison with the Humax Freesat+.

1 The Panny you can't select view for future programmes that you want to watch, it's greyed out, unlike the Humax.

2 With the Humax you can watch a third programme while recording 2 others as long as the third programme is on the same transponder as one of those being recorded.

3 Access to non Freesat channels is much better on the Panny by selecting input source on the remote, not the long winded way you have to go about it on the Humax.

I don't know if anyone from Panasonic monitors this forum but I am hoping that 1 & 2 above can be incorporated with future firmware upgrades.

Apart from the above the Panny is a superb bit of kit, I have a Panny 42" Plasma and the upscaled 1080p picture is superb both in HD and SD via HDMI as is the sound through my Pioneer SC-LX71 AV Receiver.

Hope this helps those of you considering the purchase of one of these.

HDMI inputs don't exist on any HD recording equipment (HDCP prevents them working). HD recording from other than a HD camcorder requires an analogue component input.

Now it is £817.18 at Amazon.

Perhaps when it is under £500.00 and has a 1Tb drive.

Even at £500.00 I would not buy one because

1 When recording 2 you can't watch a 3rd so the hdr is a lot cleverer.

2 Blue ray archive discs will only play on the machine they were recorded on. If the machine needs a warranty replacement your expensive archived material will be useless

I have been considering the Panny 750 or 850 -

The Panasonic shop showed me recordings off the BBC HD of Wimbledon recently, then recorded to Blu-ray disc. The use of the machine looked easier than the HDR

BUT if Graham is correct that the Blu-ray discs can't be played elsewhere, and it is using the copy once flag - then it is a non-starter, especially if you can't copy ITV HD to Blu-ray.

I will stick to my flawed Hummy for now and hope the new one they are sending me works properly.

It is just a bit disappointing so far.
