I felt like listening to something new, I like Coldplay, The Beatles, The Kinks, Wings, Pink Floyd, etc. so I went on some website, don't ask me what it was, anyway, It told me to listen to Radiohead, well a friend of mine likes them, so I thought well Ok, computer (excuse the pun) I will.

I listened to the aforementioned OK Computer, and I thought it was the biggest load of whale-blubber i had ever had to listen to, what is the appeal of the band? I think I may officially hate them, yuch dreadful.

On top of this, Spotify gives you some other artists at the top, I looked at those and thought, hmmm, Muse, I think I've heard of them, they're even worse.

They sound as if they're trying to be Radiohead, failing horribly.

Personally, I think I'll try out The Verve instead or maybe even The Small Faces...

EDIT: After finding out that The Verve are in fact druggies, I think I may try some other band, but it never did The Beatles any harm I suppose...

Radiohead are fantastic but have gone a bit weird recently. Try listening to The Bends album and if you like things a bit heavier go for Pablo Honey.

The Bends for me is not only their best album by a mile but one of THE best albums ever. I think for someone coming to Radiohead who hasn't heard them before, this has to be the starting point or none of the rest makes sense. Even OK Computer. It's a straightforward rock album full of great tunes and without the experimental 'weirdness' that crept in afterwards that I can totally imagine being off-putting.

I do like OK Computer, and it has some brilliant songs, but I can see why some may not like it. However, The Bends is amazing, and Pablo Honey is brilliant as well, so I'd recommend those two as starting places. Can't say I'm a massive fan of their more recent stuff, though.

The Bends is better , but radiohead are like the smiths hard to get into but worth the effort , if i was you i'd try the bends first

For me the coolest time ever was listening to the bootlegs of the first shows they did previewing Kid A and Amnesiac tracks. It was like 'wtF???' and getting into this crazy new sound. Stuff like Optimistic, the title track Kid A, Pyramid Song (then called Egyptian Song), The National Anthem et al. That was the moment they became legends IMO.

Radiohead are definitely NOT for everyone, and you can't get into them quickly.

Even though I think they're an amazing band, I'm not going to try to convert anyone to Radiohead, but I would say to the OP that you should try a few other albums before giving up as they're all quite different. None of the others are really like OK Computer.

I know people who aren't really Radiohead fans but who really like the warmer and less experimental In Rainbows so don't forget that album too. A good place to start would be the 'From the Basement' videos on youtube such as All I Need or Reckoner or Nude or Weird Fishes.

indeed. fake plastic trees is one of my favourite songs ever. OK computer was OK, but patchy.

the pyramid song was, IMO, tuneless dirge.

The Bends and Pablo Honey are less experiemental than their other albums: OK Computer, Kid A, Amnessiac, Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows.

I'll agree that Radiohead isn't for everyone...neither is Muse. But I'm a big fan of both, I think it just depends on your likings =P

I think they're amazing and I really like OK Computer, but it took a few listens to get into.

The first one I listened to was The Bends, which is much more accessible. Pablo Honey is also a good album and very listenable.

I like some of their more recent stuff, and I do like Kid A but I wouldn't recommend it to someone starting off on the band.

I love radiohead, just the sort of music i'm into- not mainstream. Saw them at glasto in 2003 and they were fantastic

Ok Computer is one of the greatest albums ever recorded, it is phenomenal. And I don't like their other albums that much, so please don't think I am some kind of fanboy.

Personally can't stand Radiohead. I've tried a few times to listen to them, but there is simply nothing about them that grabs me.

All in all i have seen Radiohead live around a dozen times, from supporting The Frank and Walters and Kingmaker in King Tut's to headlining T in the Park. Pablo Honey is very good with both The Bends and OK Computer on a similiar level for me(arguably best album ever) but from Kid A on they just haven't done it for me.

They have some amazing songs.

Easily one of the best bands ever, but I can understand why people might find OK Computer a little difficult (there are some breathtaking tracks on there though, Paranoid Android, Karma Police, Climbing Up The Walls) but for me they've never bettered The Bends.

In Rainbows is a lot more accessible than their other recent albums, so is also worth a listen.

I love them so much, been my favourite band since I was 11. Can't wait to see them at Reading.

I was a Radiohead fan up till Kid A, at which point I believe they dissapeared up their own arses.

Are radiohead a three piece band that have a light show with dancing robots and incorporate classical concertos into songs. Have a catologue mixed with rock, classical, pop and italian influences and are lead by a frontman who believes the queen is a lizard? Because i cant see how muse are trying to be radiohead

They have never claimed Radiohead as one of their influences, if they were such fans that they want to be them they'd be reccomending them as they often talk about who inspired them to make music.

Fact is that matt bellamy (frontman of muse) has enough musical inspiration elsewhere without radiohead getting a look. His dad was a guitarist in The Tornados and he made him listen to ray charles when he was a kid in which matt sat and listened to and self taught himself to play piano, matt plays a lot of classical music from chopin, rachmaninov and Lizst, he just spent several years perfecting his own symphony because he wanted to learn to do the arrangements himself. He's also greatly influenced by jimi hendrix and Tom Waits. Muse may want to be someone but radiohead isnt it despite the coincidences.

Its impossible to be original, find anyone and theres someone who's done it before and better.

As the appeal of Radiohead, i dont like them personally but its something that can never be explained with any band as somethings just appeal to you personally. I cant put into words why i like the bands or composers that I do all i can say is they make the music that i want to listen to. I cant say because "his guitar work is impressive" because that would mean nothing to you as you wouldnt share the same appreciation

Yes they have. When their debut album, Showbiz, was out and everyone was comparing them to Radiohead. They said they were big fans and were an influence. I remember it well.

I agree they've become a very different band to Radiohead and the comparison is lazy or ill-informed these days. I personally have never been able to warm to Muse. Alot of style over substance and not enough variation or progression for my liking....but anyway, we all have different tastes and this thread is about Radiohead.
