Probably worth a look at this thread on the Digifusion forum, investigating technical solutions:
Can epg be copied?

I suggested something similar using macro commands on JP1 OneForAll remotes.

Possible, but a bit klunky.

I gather that the DHD4000 will not work well after DSO unless the hard drive is switched to specific 2.5" laptop drives (ie. those the controller will work with). That and the absence of a HDMI socket (SCARTS are becoming rare on the latest TV's) means it getting a bit long in the tooth much as I really like the unit.

Given that the platform has been defunct for 5 years it's actually pretty impressive that the legacy arrangements for the EPG lasted so long. I'll use mine in manual mode for a bit longer then retire it I think.

Sorry, I've not been following these issues too closely as my DHD4000 has just been happily working...

What's the problem with DHD4000s after DSO? Bit rate too high for the existing hard disk? I've already swapped mine to a 160GB one ages ago. Will this work?

Regards,
Richard

Apparently, the 8k mode decoding is more power-hungry than the current 2k mode.

Users in switched-over areas reported trouble scanning for the new mode multiplexes, and in some cases had to resort to a tedious manual method. Channel changing can also result in sound, but no picture - though this can be fixed by changing up a channel or two then back to the desired one.

Some users discovered that a 2.5" laptop drive uses only one of the two power rails, helping to relieve the power overhead of the 8k mode change.

Since DSO my Thomson DHD4000 stammers and stutters and has become completely unwatchable. I reckon I will just have to bin it.

I can still view recordings already on the hard disc and there are a few I would like to put on DVD.

Is it possible to open up the box, extract the hard disk, run it on a computer and make DVDs that way?

Oh that's not good news - we get switched over next month!

I am not aware of anyone ever extracting the DHD4000 data in the same way that Digifusion owners could.

Not so. The same software could be used. I did it myself, but only when I had the machine apart to upgrade the disk. Too much hassle otherwise, without also doing a USB interface mod.

Yes it is.I've been doing for years using Dan Hope's Fusion viewer & project X and a a few other bits and bobs. There is a thread somewhere in the Digifusion section.

Software to extract is here

I switched off my DHD4000 a couple of nights ago as it was a little warm, and I believed cleaning and dusting inside was in order. So, yesterday I dusted out internally and put the machine back together again (cut on thumb - situation normal).

After switching on, I thought I'd see what the log files were doing now there was no EPG downlload, and up to the 18th July they seemed 'normal', in as much they were starting up at the correct time, about 94 pages long, and seemed to be trying to download the EPG.

However, for the 19th July (the night before I switched off my box), the log file was started at 01:45 and was 7 pages long as follows:

System log file 19/07/10 01:45

TopUpdate task - getting time from tuner 1 (was 1)

Page 2 as above, but timed at 01:46
Page 3 as above but timed at 01:47
Page 4 as above but timed at 01:52
Page 5 as above, but timed at 01:53
Page 6 as above but timed at 01:54
Page 7 was totally blank (not even a page number)

There was no other log file for that night, i.e. it did not try to download the EPG at 03:00. At least I don't think it did; I was in bed so can't confirm whether it started up and and what time(s).

So, did anyone else get this? I just wonder what made it try to download at 01:45. Mine is a fairly standard DHD4000 with 2.3.9 firmware and the only upgrade I've done is to fit a 160GB HDD.

I have no log file for the 20th as the box was switched off, and last night's log file was 'normal' (93 pages long) starting at 03:00.

Right, I stand corrected. I was under the impression that the Syphon extraction program was only for Digifusions.

My log files were the usual standard 120-odd pages for the dates you mention.

Maybe your transmitter was undergoing some overnight maintenance?

Or would the Summer high atmospheric pressure have anything to do with it? I noticed on mine when I was in the technical menu, that the number of channels increased from 99 to 119. This has happened in the past; occasionally a multiplex on the Black Hill group gets picked up.

I'm in the Crystal Palace area. It was switched to 8K mode ages ago, which works fine with my DHD4000.

The machine is somewhat glitchy at certain things, but then it's always been like that anyway and is no worse now.
