Scariest moment of my life.

About an hour ago i was sitting in the living room while the dogs were in the garden and all of a sudden, i heard one of the dogs yelp, when i looked out the dog was jumping around the garden with the patio table stuck to his neck.

When i rushed outside the dog had his collar caught in the screw bolt part that keeps the umbrella in, and his collar was choking him.

We tried cutting getting the collar off but it was too tighly wrapped round, finally got the scissors in and thecollar was too tough for them to cut.

By this point his eyes were almost closed, mouth was spitting up blood and he was barely breathing, it took nearly another 5 minutes to losen the bolt off the table to take the preasure off by this point it looked like he had stopped breathing all together.

When i finally got the bolt off, while having a hysterical fit and just about choking on my own heart the little ****er, freshly loose who was all but dead a second a go, jumps up, has a little run around the garden, has a drink of water and goes on like nothing happened!

I can honestly say i have never been that scared in my whole life, we have called the vets to check he will be ok, because we are worried that he might of damaged his throat to be the point that if we feed him he could choke again. Hes stil panting pretty heavy but other than that he does seem toaly normal.

Just thought i would share that here and see if anyone else has had a close call like that with any of their pets.

Thats what my mam said, by the time the scissors didnt work, she was keeping saying its too late, so its lucky we kept at it.

I just cant stop thinking what would have happened if we had of been out, we would of came home to find him dead in the garden.

Well done you! That would've scared the sh*t out of me!

We've experienced something similar to you. Our 2 year old setter loves plastic drinks bottles and very often takes them out of the recycling bin to squash (once she has squashed them, she's bored of them ).

A little while ago, she came trotting into the front room and she had one in her mouth. She got bored of the bottle and a little while later, my mum noticed her chewing something... she rolled onto her back and she started choking... turns out that she had loosened a lid off of the bottle and it went down her throat! my mum leapt off of the chair and had to reach in and get it from her throat! She would've choked to death otherwise

We've always been careful to take off the lids but now we are very wary of leaving them on.

You can always tell when she has something she knows she shouldn't have because she always comes in to show you

my friend had a bad incident involving her dogs in her garden and a collar getting stuck and the dog almost strangling himself, thats why i never leave a collar on my dog.

He should never be able to escape the garden but is microchipped i could not cope with the worry of leaving him and wondering what may happen after hearing her story.

I am glad your dog will be okay, i could not imagine going through that terrifying ordeal x

No tales as bad but Murphy had one of those awful denta chews. He got it stuck on his teeth and with the messsing to get it off, got his collar caught up in his jaw. No threat of immanent death, but the trust he showed letting me sort him out was touching.

He wears a loose half choke which he can normally get off if he wants, but we pretty much leave it on the lead and take it off after walks.

A couple of weeks ago he choked on a chicken wing - gave him a good hearty slap to the back and he was fine.

I can imagine how terrifying for you the incident was - but dogs live in the moment. Bad thing gone - lets revert to default. As you are a good owner providing a great life, default is pretty good

I'm glad he seems to be okay now!

Not had one as bad/scary as that (well obviously at the time they seem that way!), just a few.

One was a cat I used to have and he hated his collar. It was a safety one, but he still somehow managed to tangle himself up in it and was choking on it. He was panicing and so were we, so it was all claws and shrieking. Finally managed to cut it off, good job cat collars are so much thinner I guess.

The other was when one of my two I have now was a kitten. We got her a little cat house that had a mouse hanging from a bit of elastic. Somehow she got the cord wrapped around her tail and was trying to run off with it attached and it was getting tighter and tighter. Managed to cut it off at the top and get it off that way. First thing I did was cut that bloody elastic bit off and let her maul the mouse

So lucky that both times I was nearby or I dread to think

Well done for staying calm enough to help him!

Cannot even imagine how I would react in that situation. Hope he's okay when the vet checks him over.

How scary for you but well done for keeping calm & managing to free him.

I've had a cat with it's head through the handle of a plastic carrier bag, panicked & legged it up a tree before I could catch him. He managed to somehow free himself but not without bruising to his neck. All bags are now kept out of reach from cats & dogs!

One of my dogs, (before I owned him) used to wear a metal choke chain. When playing with staffie friend, the staffie's leg got caught in the choke chain, so the staffie panicked, the collar got tighter & tighter, nearly strangling Barney to the extent that his eyes bulged & blood vessels broke. To make it worse, the staffie's fear & pain made him attack Barney leaving deep puncture wounds in his chest.

I would never use a choke chain but I always take collars off indoors, just in case of accidents when they have rough & tumble games.

OMG - how terrifying for you - well done you on getting him free.

Because I show mine, they don't tend to wear collars in the house / garden - except for my boy because invariably he is the one we need that extra element of control with.

I have heard a similar story when one dog got caught up in another dog's collar while playing, it is quite scary how easily it can happen.

Hope he suffers no ill effects from his experience (although by the sounds of it, hardly surprising, you have probably been shaken up more).
