I went to port my mobile number from Orange to Vodafone today. However Vodafone informed me, that as my Monthly contract was now active, that they would not be able to do this. They then went on to say this is standard industry practice.

So how come a couple of months back I was able to port an Orange number to a Three contract after the contract had been active for about 2 weeks.

Is this just what Vodafone do? I have now resorted to cancelling the contract, and then taking the exact same contract out again, so that I am able to port my number over. Seems ridiculous to me.

Its not standard practice, however the providers are allowed to set a time limit for transferring in a number, so Vodafone are doing nothing wrong. Vodafone's way of handling the mechanics of porting is also different from the other networks.

Yeah I have had the same issue with Vodafone, it's crazy and one of the reason I don't use them any more.

Yes, it's just how Vodafone like to do it.

You have to supply them with the number & PAC at sign up.

I signed up online; there was a problem with my PAC. So what do they do? Send you your new contract with a brand new number. Absolutely stupid, they should at least contact people and explain there is a problem with the PAC and ask if they want to continue or cancel.

Hi Chili Con Carne

I realise that this is not an ideal situation for you.

prking is right about this. The mechanics behind porting a number to Vodafone are slightly different to other networks. For this reason we are unable to port a number onto an existing contract. We can only do it at the point of sale.

I will certainly feedback yours and other posters comments about this to the business as I understand that this will have an impact on some customers when joining us.

It's great to have you with us and thank you for your patience

T-Mobile will let you port numbers in whenever you want, i've done it recently and a few months into my latest contract. It's a good way of avoiding the £10 charge that they normally sting you for if for some reason you want a new number.
I'm sure Vodafone would allow you to change your number as many times as you like - for a fee each time though.

Is that a polite way of saying 'hard cheese mate, that's the way it is - like it or lump it'?

Yeah, I have the same problem to port exisiting number to Vodafone. I think this should be well known by most of mobile phone users. Especially for the mobile phone users who are going to sign a contract to Vodafone from a website or store other than Vodafone.
