Good share and a decent rating, it did better than I was expecting it to (4-4.5 million).

Of course, those will be the overnights, with something of this naure the recorded viewings will be interesting.”

I don't think it was ever expected to manage that. New Tricks is well established on the channel having been there for 5 years and is not a sci-fi show so appeals to a wider section of the audience than Torcwhood (no idea why, love sci-fi).

The most I was expecting was 6 million and I didn't think it'd manage 5.9 (just 100k off that) without that Gwen doctor trailer to establish the conection (there's been a lot of crap modern drama on BBC 1 recently. If it wasn't for the likes of Spooks, Bonekickers and Survivors would have put me off even giving new 9pm dramas there a go).

I think it's a pretty impressive figure for Torchwood. It's been gaining at least 1 million viewers for it's opening episode each year. I wouldn't be suprised if the ratings this week drop as low as 4 million. I'm not trying to be negative just realistic. With drama the first episode always gets a lot more viewers than later episodes. I think as long as it doesn't fall below 4 million it should be fine for a new series next year.

I think the BBC would want to keep the drama going - look how disastrous Totally Saturday was! 2.1million and...... cancelled.

@ Digital Sid

My ratings comment was more about the generic BBC1 ratings than ratings specifically for TW. As you indicate, with the sort of programme that is normally shown, and then bearing in mind how different TW is,those figures are very good/excellent for TW on a TW level (if you see what I mean).

This year yes, however you have 26 episodes (all pretty seperate stories) to watch after this if you intend on catching up after to fill the Who void.

The first 13 (series 1) aren't that great, watchable though, but they're worth it for the other 13. Particularly the last 5 or so of them.

Excellent news -pleased for the Torchwood team -can't ask much more than than that in the summer ..

5.9 Million, 26% share sounds briliant -equal to Ashes to Ashes ...great stuff.

Hopefully yesterday's cliffhanger, the intriguing to a newbie fact that Jack can't die, the bit of character development during the family scenes yesterday and most of the BBC 2 and 3 viewers staying with it will help it keep it's head above 5 million tonight and 4.5 million for the rest of the week.

The competition increases as the week goes on, but if enough enjoyed it the good start should help it stay above 4.

Depends on if it keeps up pace I guess. A few critics have said that eps 2 and 3 aren't quite as good as 1, but they also said it picks back up.

Does anyone remember if they told viewers before the next time or during the credits that the show continues tomorrow?

I think it just said 'next time' in which case, there might be some viewers who hadn't seen all the ads and just channel flicked to it who assume it's next week.

Indeed, it's up against "Big Brother" tonight, tomorrow and Friday - which has just started 'bubbling' this year - though it has a +1 option if you're able.

Next week's You Have Been Watching (Channel 4's new heavily trailed Charlie Brooker show which starts tonight) is dedicated to Torchwood:

Big Brother is no competation for anything these days....

It got less than 2 million viewers again last night!

I was thinking particularly of both shows going for a generally younger audience profile and being similarly stripped across the week though.

Amazing how we have a topic labled TW Reviews yet hardly any reviews, so after 2 pages of uselezs ratings chat (Sorry I never take into account ratings as useally they not that accurate), So what did everyone think of TW.

(Opologise if you answerd it in a post amung the discussion on ratings but I by [passed them)

Thought it was a good opening session and looks good for the week.

It was the most requested show on iplayer when I rewatched it this morning so due to the good weather in some cities (not here in Cardiff, pissed down) the final rating may be up a bit (PVRs and all that).

hmm, i dunno. I think TW will have a broader audience, it also has the advantage of only being on for a week...BB is the kind of show it's easy to drop and pick up at will, not that many bother with it anymore...

And quite possibly, due to it being broadcast on consecutive nights, the overnights might be all over the place with more people that normal electing to timeshift due to other engagements.

Not me - I'm timeshifting everything else around TW!

As I am - recording it as well, with an option to record the BBC3 showing as well.

Never watched, Torchwood, before, thought it was too 'adult' for the kids, but there was nothing else on last night..

Wow.. it was brilliant, and cannot wait for the next episodes tonight and so forth...
really fabulous viewing, has us all glued..

Last nights ratings are infact excellent and much higher than I thought. Remember that some of BBC1s drama hits only get around 6m (ie Waking the Dead/Silent Witness).

Would still expect a fall tonight but certainly doing much better than I expected.

Apparently Barrowman was on Scott Mills today (radio 1) so that should help tonight.
