They really should make sky+, freeview+ and freesat+(?) the standard me thinks. Cuts out most of the hassle of clashes.

24% share and again holding solid across the hour 5.5m up to 5.65m at the end.

ITV1 only managed 2.9m

Yeah comfortable win over Emmerdale/Eastenders with 4.7m and Holby with 4.8m.

More people watched TW than Eastenders...

I'm guessing EE lost some of it's audience to the MJ snooze feast on the other channels...

Yes BBC2 wasn't far behind Eastenders and actually had the biggest share of viewers at 8-8:30pm.

Seconded, on both counts.

If it carries on like this, BBC would be idiots not to give it a fourth run!

i reakon it'll get a fourth run too, but i know find myself hoping they just have two or three longer stories rather than going back to the old forumla, it really has proved to be the ideal formate for TW, imho.

Am really glad the ratings held up.

I always expect a drop of after the first ep from people just tuning into see what it's like but not bothering to carry it on.

Am really glad so far it is holding it's own and the good ratings will surely mean they will give us a 4th series.

I agree, Even if they split it up over the year it would be good - say have 1 story around March, one in the Summer and then one around October/November.

I really like how this week is going so far and think it works very well.

I agree. Broadcasting each part on consecutive days has proven to be a great idea that makes sure people don't have to wait that long for the next part - hence why it has probably retained most of it's audience.

If there is a fourth series, I would suggest to either keeping the current format or doing something similar but not the old format.

Yeah, maybe 2 x four parters (give us a break on Friday), which is 8 hours a year, not actually that much down on 13 x 50 min episodes. It would also be easier for the regulars, so they weren't committed for the majority of the year.

I think it has succeeded as event TV.

The success of TW shows there is a demand and place for the sci-fi genre in peak time schedules, and shoots down in flames all the "TV audiences don't like sci-fi" type comments we hear so often.

Not quite. There's a demand for soft-SF. Something taking place in the "real world".

Stick something full of technobabble, spaceship battles and people with bumpy foreheads there and see how it does.

Fair comment, but the background of the "real world" is needed to provide a contrast and context for the more fantastical elements.

It's a combination that works, and soft or not, it's still sci-fi in prime time, pulling good sized audiences. If that what it takes to stop the schedules being clogged up with soaps and yet more dial-a-singer/dancer type shows, then bring it on!

Add that to the tiny drop in ratings between the first two episodes and another series is pretty much a certainty at this point.

I don't want to digress too much as this is really a topic for the wider 'cult' forum, but I think stcoop has a point. I've often wondered just how well the likes of even "Battlestar Galactica" would have done on terrestrial prime-time here - that's if it would even have been deemed prime-time material at all. Sky seems to have hammered most sci-fi into a digital ghetto.

Back on topic, I have complained to MediaGuardian about their downplaying of Torchwood's ratings success yesterday.

Day Two beat Eastenders, Emmerdale and Holby City BTW.

(Thank you Michael Jackson!)
