From OnlineBiz

The coffee chain Coffee Republic has gone into administration after months of speculation over its future.

The chain which has struggled to make a profit against rivals Costa and Starbucks but has operated since 1995 across the UK. Rapid expansion nearly caused the collapse of the company in 2003 when it shut many of its loss making stores.

The group has 153 directly-employed staff, 127 at 20 group-operated outlets. There are 187 Coffee Republic-branded cafes in total in the UK and overseas, including 70 franchises and a further 97 concessions in cinemas, retail outlets and hotels.

Richard Hill, restructuring partner at KPMG, said: “The recession is hitting discretionary spending on the high street and some of the less profitable bars with expensive leases have suffered.

“However, Coffee Republic has a strong brand and I expect considerable interest in the profitable parts of the business

I never liked CR, always found it expensive and of poor quality compared to the other chains

I've never understood coffee chains in general, but perhaps that's just me.

Where did people meet before there were coffee shops?

I liked Coffee Republic, but prefer their real cafes rather than concessions in Cineworld for example. The ones in Wimbledon and Manchester for example have been closed or sold, but at least 4 in Greater London (Victoria, Portobello Road, North Finchley and Ilford) are still open, as is one in Birmingham. Admittedly I was a bit dismayed not to have been given a lid when I had a takeaway coffee at North Finchley in 2010 but they must have run out.

I think Costa will be fine.

Soon, there will be only three food outlets on the high street; Tesco, McDonald's and Costa Coffee. The end of the world is nigh

Coffee Republic seem to be expanding again. According to their website they have brances that have just opened or soon will. There is a new branch at Marble Arch, London and soon to open at Bromley, Kent. A few more places than expected have branches, such as Hove and Doncaster.

That said, it is only real Coffee Republic branches I like to use, not the Concessions at cinemas.

It seems like Costa is completely dominating now.

Used to go to Coffee Republic a decade or so ago. I remember they used to do Meal Deals at one point. Oh and they brought out a Mince Pie Latte - which I tried once. A lot of their drinks had Oreos too.

Surprised they're still going. Last went to the Portobello branch 2 years ago. Maybe I'll look out for them now.

I used the Portobello Road branch on Easter Monday. I was riding several new and rare buses in central London then. As a joke, I told a friend that they must have put something in the coffee, as the bus I caught immediately afterwards felt the most comfortable of the day! (It was a hybrid Volvo double-decker on route 52).

There were 2000 coffee houses in London in 1700, so it's not a really new thing

I wonder how many of these were Costa Coffee, the Tesco of coffee chains?
