I'm disappointed with this news and find it quite unbelievable really. Not sure I will bother with SCD anymore, it was bad enough last year what with the John Sargent fiasco and the 3 finalists!

Well to be honest, it's their show, it will get good figures regardless of who is on.
I'm not so sure about that. With the John Sergeant fiasco last year, the length of last year's series (it really felt never-ending!) and now this, I think there might well be a drop in ratings. It may be the BBC's show but it's the viewers who watch it and if they don't like what they see, they won't watch.

Hmmm, I wonder if we might be missing the point a bit. I don't think the BBC are putting Alesha on the panel as an 'expert' - we already have three experts on the panel with tons of experience (potentially four with the addition of Darcy). maybe Alesha is supposed to be there more as the public voice - the entertainment side of things, of which she'd be a fine judge.

In the wake of the John Sargent stuff last year, a good portion of the viewers were screaming for the judges to consider the entertainment side of people's performances and I believe Alesha will do just that. I think it'll be nice and refreshing to have a more 'human' person on the panel rather than just four technique hounds.

That said - I'd have preferred it if she was coming in to replace Tess!

YAY a voice of reason well said fraggle_bean

Yep you are quite correct, but if they have gor it right the drop in figures will come back. {{ she hopes}}

I can't believe that Alesha is going to be a judge.

I really don't see how it will work out. I have a feeling that she's going to favour "her" Matthew during the series. If I were one of the professional dancers, I would really resent having someone like Alesha on the panel. Yes she won SCD, but she is in no way qualified to judge performance or otherwise.

What a joke.

The BBC have followed in the steps of ITV.

The X Factor needed to spice things up a bit so they hired Cheryl Cole. Some experience in the music industry but she's hardly got an award winning voice. Yet she judges on the show and has for no particular reason, proved to be hugely popular and has boosted their ratings.

The BBC have done the same, Alesha isn't the best dancer in the world but she does have some experience. They're hoping that by bringing a younger face to the table, it will freshen up the show and make it more appealing to viewers who would usually tune into the X Factor.

Good move IMO. Last years series wasn't a great one and I think this will bring back viewers who stopped watching last time.

Its an odd decison, but i'm going to wait before criticising it.

Alesha may be put in a difficult position regarding scoring - especially Matt - however we dont know if Matt is even returning for season 7 of the show - so again its difficult to criticise it on that grounds as we dont know anything yet.

With Cheryl on the X Factor I guess they needed someone young and popular in Strictly so went for Alesha

Season 7 is going to be an interesting me thinks

I'm not happy about Alesha joining the judging panel. I quite liked her on the show, but I don't know how she will work as a judge. If she had replaced Tess on the other hand ... Personally I would rather have seen Karen or Camilla replace Arlene. At least they know what they're meant to be looking for.

Really? Fair play. I think the Hough siblings are phenomenal.

But yeah, I still think that Mel B was far more impressive that Alesha, and that's probably because she is a lot more flexible and therefore able to do more things on the dancefloor.
Oh yes, sorry, I like the Hough siblings and also Mark Ballas alongside Karina and Maks, don't always watch so their names do escape me!

BuddyB also reinforced the difference of the American and UK styles too..glad I wasn't losing the plot

Hi i am a loyal X Factor Fan. And never watched Strictly Come Dancing as i hate it. But i must say i don't like the way the BBC has got rid of Arleane Phillips from the show. I was angry when Sharon Osbourne left X Factor but this is age-ism i am sure. And plus Alesha has her singing to focus on.

Just my opinon thats all.

Another thought - the fact that there will be 5 judges will now mean Len will not have the deciding vote in the dance off as they winning couple will now have to have a majority decision.

I think thats a good think really

It's much fairer but 5 judges feels like a lot. One thing I didn't like about DOI was the number of judges.

Agreed 5 judges seems alot - the scores will be out of 50 instead of 40... however we dont even know if the judges will be scoring the couples yet - I mean wasn't there various things saying the whole voting system was going to be looked at

I reckon this is the first of a few big changes thats gonna happen

... And I really can't say I'm sorry.

I had a pang of doubt the other week when I caught her on Desert Island Discs and she sounded rational, sane and reasonable. Then I had to remind myself of the appalling favouritism and outright lies she descended to on SCD6. Or maybe she was told to by the producers? We shall probably never know.

I agree with other posters who are happy to keep an open mind about this. I would, of course, love the other changes pending to include the removal of Bruno - Arlene's partner in crime ...

More than this, I would hope that heads have rolled behind the scenes as well - the root of an awful lot of the trouble last year, I strongly suspect ...

I reckon they should change the first dances that the male and female couples do - men have always had to dance the Waltz or Cha Cha Cha in the first week. Girls used to dance either the Quickstep or Rumba up until last year when they changed it to Salsa and Foxtrot.

Men should do an American Smooth or a Paso Doble.
Women should do a Tango or a Cha Cha Cha.
