This guy is set to become "the next big thing" in mainstream hip-hop this year so I thought it'd be interesting to see what some of the opinions are of him on DS.

For those unfamiliar with him, he's a producer/rapper signed to Rocafella records, who is finally releasing his debut album next month. He's already well known for producing tracks for other artists (including Scarface, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z and others) but is only now releasing an album of his own featuring his own raps. All this comes just over a year after he was involved in a near-fatal car crash, in which he had to have reconstructive surgery on his jaw and then had to have it wired shut.

Anyway, what is the general consensus - do you think it is all hype or is it justified?

I've been listening to a radio station in Vegas and they've been playing two of his tracks on high rotation. The beats are solid.

im surprised he hasnt blown up as quickly as 50 cent,
he is just as good as him if not better.

he did an interview with DJ SEMTEX on 1xtra last friday.
access everything from here . its got some of 1xtra DJ's fave songs off his album. At the near bottom of the page, it says:
1) Listen to entire album
2) Semtex speaks to Kanye and Damon Dash
3) Check pics of Kanye in the studio

check out these links.

though i suspect he wont get as much Recognition as others have in the UK pop charts, i suspect he'll do well in the 1xtra charts and other hip-hop charts.

He's a household name in the states but over here is barely recognised. Haven't been able to get a copy of his album from any of the usual high street retailers so will have to resort to Amazon.

It's a shame that we have here an example of a rapper who isn't just all about guns, hoes and drugs yet most of the British media seem to ignore him and instead concentrate on artists like 50 Cent. It only serves to reinforce stereotypes of rap only being about violence, drugs etc and I see this as a real missed opportunity to show otherwise.

The album is out now, it just came out.

I have to go to work now, but I will say this quickly, the album is fantastic, give it a listen.

He's a great producer, and, it seems a great rapper

The album has just gone in at number 2 in the US Billboard charts.

though its no1 on the Billboard RnB/Hip hop chart: link here
i suspect the majority of pop (girly) voters in the US wouldnt have got the album to get it to no1

the main consensus is more or less he's a great producer and has some realyl good beats on the album, but as a lyricist, he's ok but not great. They are rather simplistic and some people say he should just stick to producing...

Got the album.....impressed with it. I don't think it will do nothin massive over here as it aint as commercialised as say 50 cent for example. Its the same with Luda for me, I still dont think he properly made it over here, despite havin 3 quality albums.

Through The Wire has just been playlisted on Radio 1, remember this single isnt being released until 22nd March, so we cant say if he will take off just yet, as most people wont have heard it yet.
