The Vision2 box is obviously not coming anytime soon.

So that gives a chance to discuss whether basing it on Freeview or Freesat is the best option.

Freeview gives the cheap option IMO. Allows "some" HD content in the future over linear channels. I just think that given the standards being set by Sky it is a mistake to go down that road.

Freesat would give a better chance for multiple linear HD channels. The development of "some" pay TV like sports on the Freesat platform would help too.

Suppose another factor is Sky being forced into Wholesale distro. With satellite a BTV2 box could pick up signals in a more simple fashion than transmission over an IP network.

For me - satellite tuners are a must. Freesat it is then.

You cant ignore DVBT2 - that would be suicide.

I would say that ideally there would be two versions of the BTV2 box - 1 for DVBT2 and the other for Freesat. Customers would choose which one they want at sign up.

would it be too expensive for them (the company assigned by bt) to produce a box that had both tv aerial and satellite inputs in the back and then on the first boot up, or every hard reset, you choose the epg that the box needs to work from? So in effect only one box needs to be supplied by BT making ordering easy, and giving us (the consumer) the choice?

i hope that made sense!?!

makes sense but not cost effective.
would need 4 tuners (2 sat/2 freeview).

V2 freesat and V2 freeview as two sep products would make sense.

I can dream !!.

I'm pretty sure bt have already said the v2 box wont have freesat support, its also been hinted it wont have dvbt2 at least at first however with the fact its been delayed so so long is starting to make me think dvbt2 support may be included, dont forget freesat doesnt have a huge amount of space for hd channels either (its only really got the satelites that point directly at the uk)

Definately think it would be wise to have a Freeview version and a FreeSat version. I see no need for having both in 1 box.

FreeSat uses the same Satelite Sky uses (Astra2?), and indeed the HD channels (BBC HD) are the exact same transmission as Sky users receives, so space is not an issue in terms of competing with Sky.

Correct if I'm wrong here obviously

freesat is however restricted either to channels on satelites pointed directly at the uk (astra2d and one other i think) or channels that dont have any cross-european programma rights problems

its the main channel providers BBC, Channel4, ITV and five that have to stay on 2D. Freesat can technically use 2A and 2B, and Eurobird 5 no problem. some humaxes can be unlocked to scan in the other 3 sats.

personally I'd get a Darkbox or Technomate HD. at least ALL the channels on all four sats at 28e load up. and you get ITV HD as a channel rather than the red button. sure you loose interactivity but the choice is better.

what always puzzled me is why choose such a low orbital position? surely one nearer 1w would have been better.

Freesat is ok, just a shame I can't receive it.
