i think singles were doomed from the moment they stopped being artistic product in their own right and turned into a marketing tool for albums.

Totally, not even 6 year olds are stupid enough to pay £3.99 for a CD.

The death of the CD single yeah, its inevitable, just as the death of the CD album will be, a few years later. Hardly a surprise when one of the biggest sellers this xmas has been portable mp3 players.

I certainly wouldn't say its the death of the single all together though, infact I'm sure sales will make a comeback when online purchases become the norm, and online sales become part of the charts (assuming they sell them cheap enough).

In fact I think album sales might well suffer if they don't sell albums relatively cheap enough. Why buy an album full of filler tracks, when you could get the singles you like of an artist for cheaper? The death of the album could be a stronger possibility, with artists releasing songs for sale online as soon as they are finished.

The single will never die in my opinion. The public associate more easily with an individual song than a whole album. Each artist has to have a focus of attention to draw people to an album, without which how would new bands come along etc?

I believe the single will die in it's present form. I'm hoping so anyway because it may tie in with the tabloids losing a bit of interest so we won't get so many acts in the charts that are there because they've got interesting private lives.
