Any idea where I can get some for well under £10 a bottle? It's only for a toast and I need enough for around 50/60 people. I know it sounds cheap but I really can't afford much as I'm having to shell out a couple of hundred pounds for the food too. It's only for the toast, not for quaffing so I'm really after cheap and cheerful. Has to be champagne too to satisfy the main organiser's (another family member) critical eye

I would rather have a decent Cava than some cheapo Champagne. I'm sure your guests would as well. Far more classy, and anyway, it's just a fizz for a toast. Trust me.

Oh, and sod the critic, he's not paying for it!

I would too but it's not about the guests it's about not being slagged off for getting the "wrong thing". You know what family's can be like
To be fair the guests won't care either way.

I have seriously thought about buying in cava, pouring it out into the glasses and trying to hide the bottles but I know I'm going to be expected to do a show and tell on the champers.

It's going to have to be champers, I won't have the time to grow a pair of cojones to serve (vastly superior) cava.

Unfortunately the critic is doing the catering to which I'm also having to contribute financially

If it's only for a Toast, you could do a lot worse than Lindauer Rose (£6.99 at Tesco) or Lindaur Special Reserve at £8.99.

The Special Reserve is an amazing bottle of fizz for the money, and you'd be hard-pushed to tell it from the real stuff. Promise!

Families! Tell me about it! Such a shame but if it's like that I guess you've not got much choice. For 60 you're going to need 10-12 bottles so that's 2 cases. Majestic are pretty good and may do you a deal. Their staff are excellent and you will at least get good advice!

I don't think you'll find any authentic champagne for well under £10 a bottle even in bulk.

Buy some good cava or brut and spend the rest getting some labels printed.

Try Lidl or Aldi, they might have some.

Such a shame that we feel the need to buy Champagne just because of the name though isn't it?

OP - if this a family thing and not a work thing is there really that much pressure to serve actual champagne?

I guess it depends on the event?? But surely if it's family then they would understand??

I agree with iw much better get a good cava than a cheap horrid champers!!

Why not go for a decent cava or Jacobs Creek sparkling instead. A good sparkling will be better than a cheapy bargain basement champagne.

I know it is better to get something other than champagne but the family member does not agree and as they are running the show and I don't want a lifetime of grief I have to acquiesce. Yes there is pressure or I wouldn't be asking and I would just get the bloody cava (which I love).
If/when people complain about how crap the champagne is I can say "I told you so" and apologise. If I buy the cava then I'm just going to get crap for the rest of my life. Bloody families...and people wonder why I try to avoid mine

Panic over

I suggested we get a couple of bottles of "good champagne" for the immediate family and do cava for the great unwashed. That went down a storm and everyone is pleased - especially me who gets some nice champers and will hoover up any left over cava

Now glass hire...do Tesco's do glass hire? I'm collecting points
