Microwave ideas
For various complicated reasons I'm without an oven for the next week so my cooking equipment is limited to a toaster, kettle and a microwave oven.
Any ideas for something more interesting and healthier than toast, pot noodles, microwaved ready meals- and, of course, takeaways? I hardly ever use my microwave. In fact I almost threw it out recently to make some space in the kitchen. I'm pleased I didn't now. |

Baked potatoes ......
Fish cooks well in a microwave too. I've done a chicken roast before now with roast potatoes in a microwave |

Is it only a microwave or a combi?
If it is a combi then read the manual for the timings for things you can do. You can grill most things such as sausages, chops, chicken, jacket spuds etc. If it is just a microwave then you can use it as a steamer. I nearly always do my veg in the steamer and also been working on getting rice cooked in it. You need a few attempts to get it right but when you do it is pretty good. Also I poach chicken breasts in the microwave. I get a chicken breast in the microwaveable bowl. Cover with water. Put on the lid. Cook on full power for 10mins. You may not think it looks to appertising or will taste of much but if you then shred it you can add it to stirfrys, curries, broths etc. |

Hang on... I'm sure I've got a George Foreman grill somewhere in the gadget graveyard under the stairs... got it as a present, used it once then decided it was too much of a pain to clean. |

Just a bog standard microwave. Never liked the idea of cooking meat in the microwave. I don't even use it to defrost frozen meat.
As with the method I use for poaching a frozen chicken breast I use the same method on 10% power to defrost a chicken breast. |

Get a large pyrex bowl, a plate large enough to cover it, and some recipes for one pot cooking... anything from casserole to curry. The only difference is it goes a bit faster in the microwave.

I get some large flap top mushrooms and make stuffed mushrooms in the microwave. Sometimes i just cook them with grated cheese.
I make soups in the microwave and curries. I make scrambled eggs in the microwave. Fish is lovely. I cook kippers, salmon, trout and cod in the microwave I make in the winter for a special treat choco rice pudding when I need perking up. Vegetables are lovely too. The microwave is wonderful invention. |

Beans / Spaghetti hoops / scrambled egg - all fine in the microwave/ Soups work too...
Jacket spuds are OK as well!! I lived my first 6 ( ) weeks in my flat with just a toaster and a microwave ![]() We must have tried every ready meal going - needless to say we've never had a microwave ready meal since the cooker was finally installed
