I've only scanned the thread but I didn't see many country singers mentioned so I thought I'd mention in case they haven't been.

Alison Krauss
Patsy Cline

My personal two favourite female vocalists already mentioned though are

Nina Simone
Kate Bush

Both combine powerful vocals with great emotion!

Personal favourites of mine -

Carrie Underwood
Kelly Clarkson
Jessie J when she's not overdoing it with trills/runs/acrobatics
(the vid on youtube with Jessie in New york by the subway singing 'who you are' with a boom box showcases her brilliance)

Mariah Carey, Beyonce & Celine Dion are vocally untouchable IMO and Christina Aggy is very good vocally

I've got loads of favourite female singers but Dusty Springfield is the ultimate for me, such emotion.

Also like the voices of this lot (there's rather a lot of them!)

Sam Brown
Alison Moyet
Aretha Franklin
Beth Rowley
Caro Emerald
Elkie Brooks
Imelda May
Jessie J
Kirsty MacColl
KT Tunstall
Mama Cass
Melody Gardot (don't like her music much but think she has a sublime voice)
Paloma Faith
Sophie Delila
Karen Carpenter

My ultimate favorite female singer is Sara Bareilles.

Her singing is effortless and I'.ve never heard her miis a note. The one thing I absolutely adore about her is the fact that she can sound even better live.

Unfortunately, she isn't hugely famous but I hope her time will come one day because she deserves it.

Anastacia is amazing, supremely powerful and lots of character in that voice of hers.
Karen Carpenter has a beautiful and pristine quality.
k.d. lang has a real pure voice as well, perfect for many genres.
Tori Amos is fantastic.
Amy Studt is promising, can be gritty and also has a very beautiful delicate tone.
Bjork is very expressive and emotive.

Too many to mention right now...
