Has any one tried using one of the computer power saving gizmos that turn off ancillary equipment power on a hdr to auto power an externally powered drive on and off (Is the 0.75W in sby low enough to not trigger the controlled sockets ?)

Hi Graham,

I haven't, but I'm interested for when I undoubtedly have to upgrade to an external eSata/USB caddied drive.

Are you saying the gizmo controls both the HDR and the external drive?

Do you have a link to one, so I can understand a bit more?

Thanks.

The USB drives I have in caddies turn off when the buffalo NAS I connect them to is powered off. The caddies are an Iomega and a maxtor, the nas is a buffalo.

Yes Les, the primary socket is monitored when the load on that falls below the threshold all the controlled sockets switch off. This is one I found on a quick search

http://www.ecoelectricals.co.uk/Show...ookieSupport=1

The threshold switch on this one is 5W so if the hdr exceeds 5W when it turns on 15 mins before recording if the external caddy is plugged in it should power up with the hrd. (Wish I thought of this before building my relay box )

Ah, I see now .....

I thought it must be switching the HDR off as well as the Ext Drive, and I wondered how it was switching back on for recordings etc. Now I understand - it only monitors the HDR socket, and only switches all the other sockets on/off.

Thanks for the explanation, and the link. One day, I'll get the courage to void my warranty and do all this

At least you know what is in your relay box, and can diagnose/fix if anything goes wrong; a lot to be said for that

Rgds.
