Clothing during regeneration

When the 9th Doctor regenerated into the 10th, his clothes weren't affected- the 10th Doctor chose something new from his wardrobe later. Likewise when the Master regenerated at the end of Utopia.

Presuming the series sticks with this approach, it begs some interesting practical questions. A regenerating Time Lord can change quite drastically- so the clothes won't fit. Aside from looking silly, not a problem if the new regeneration is shorter and/or skinnier than the old one, but might end up very uncomfortable going the other way!

I'm not sure how Matt Smith compares to David Tennant, but on the basis that Tennant is extremely skinny, it's entirely possible Smith's a size or two bigger. Will he have new clothes/shoes made just for the regeneration scene (explain away as an effect of the regeneration energy or something?), or will we see a hulk-style ripping of clothing?

I'd say Tennant's clothes are bigger on the inside!!!!!

He'll undoubtedly be in DT's clothes and look rather cool before inexplicably deciding to dress like a school teacher with a bow tie.

Clothing isn't always unaffected. The first regeneration saw the Doctor's ring and cape fall off, and the rest of the clothes alter slightly (their costumes were otherwise nearly identical anyway).

Jon Pertwee's wedding ring vanished when Doc 3 regenerated.

Tom Baker's shoes changed completely when he became Peter Davison.

This has been on my mind for ages. I'd be happy for the Hulk style ripping of clothes I guess the coat may still fit if the clothes get ripped hehe lol

Baker -> McCoy

Real size difference there! Clothes were too big for McCoy

Davison - Baker

The trousers had to be undone for when CB was wearing the cricket whites.

And Davison wore the altered outfit in Time Crash, 'cos he's put on weight over the years. LOL

You wouldn't like him when he's angry!

simple answer here - MS literally puts on DTs costume and thers your answer- its either too tight, too loose or just about right. Not seen MS and DT together but DT looks quite short compared to MS, so trousers half way up his legs

DT is either 6'1 or 6'2
MS is 6'0

So if it's way too tight, either the Doctor regenerates with his shirt (and trousers) undone, or the clothing will need to be torn

I'm getting a TV flashback coming on. What show was it where a woman humped her husband to death,.....
Maybe that's what whatever companion will be with DT at the end will do to bring on a regeneration!

No they will still fit in TV land. I was watching one of those Carry On Laughing programmes & they showed Bernard Bresslaw stealing a female nurses uniform (The nurse being 1/2 the size of him) & it still fitted him. Although it would be funny if Smith presented himself in half mast trousers & a jacket like Shane Ritchie used to wear on Summer Time Special

They altered the fifth Doc's costume for Colin Baker, they'll probably have done likewise with David's clothes for Matt.

Considering SM isn't that much fatter and is a couple of inches shorter than DT why would they need to do this?

If he's slightly shorter, he might need his trousers turning up, for example. Don't forget Matt will probably have Tennant's outfit on at least for the regeneration scene, unless they do what they did with the Troughton to Pertwee regen (i.e. off screen).

There's little point to it. They may turn his legs up if it's going to cause a problem walking around, but otherwise it's hardly going to be a big issue if the clothes are a size too big.

Probably not- he could even make a point of turning up the trousers himself- but if they're too small (not necessarily short, just too small a clothes size) then it could be an issue. Matt Smith isn't fat, or even broad shouldered, by any stretch of the imagination, but unless my eyes are deceiving me, David Tennant looks like he doesn't eat very much. It's probably all that running, but he seems terribly thin.

Maybe that's why the 11th Doctor likes trousers that require braces- he started off in a pair that were uncomfortably small and now abhors tight waists

I suppose it is likely that the costume will be quietly adjusted, but I'd rather like to see something like this mentioned. After all, 8 made a big fuss about finding suitable shoes I imagine, had we seen it, the 2->3 regeneration would have thrown up some major costume issues!
