Hi all

Beginning to feel a bit of a luddite with this box and looking for some guidance on a few things - I know I will get good advice here but bear with me.

1. We use a communal satellite dish in a block of flats - signal is fine however we can use only 1 cable to connect feed in so only LNB1 is being used (correct cable from "socket" in wall to Humax machine). Would I be able to fit a splitter to the socket on the wall in order to connect both tuners or will that just interfere with the signal.

2. My partner would love to be able to watch channels from abroad - no where special but the ability to be able to view other channels is something he would like - actually Cyprus would be one country he would like to receive.

We did a non freesat scan - only picked up the sky channels scrambled and FTA. Tuner 1 is showing and says this is fixed at 28E(?). Is there a way on this unit to receive other countries channels or because we only have 1 tuner active (as in the above point) we would not be able to receive them.

3. If we went for another make of HD Satellite PVR (for instance Technomate) but not a "freesat" unit do you think we will still have the same problems receiving overseas channels.

Any help for this luddite would be appreciated

1) You would need 2 Cables into the box as some channels are on a different Freq and separate LNB is needed to receive these channels and work correctly.

2) the channel listings are here : - http://www.astra2d.com/frequencies.htm

unless you moved the dish to pick up another satellite it can only receive the Astra channels, I'm sure the Cyprus channels are on a satellite at 7 degrees East, your dish is pointing at 28 east.

2a) there is a option on the SCAN to pick up only FTA channels you need to pick that and re-do the scan, it will only then pick up free channels.

3) to date, if your tuned onto the satellite 28 degrees' east there are only 2 EPG's FREESAT & SKY, so using a differnt box other than the Humax PVR or a SKY+ box it just wont work - The Humax picks up the Freesat EPG and the SKY+ box picks up the SKY Epg, if you decided to use the Technomate you will pick up channels but you won't be able to record stuff in the EPG.

Firstly whatever stb you buy you can't get foreign channels because your communal dish is aimed at Astra2/Eurobird 1 which as you have found out is pretty exclusively English language. To get these channels you need a motorised dish or a special lnb called a monoblock neither of which you have access to.

You can't split a sattelite signal like a terrestrial signal but you can use your hdr on one cable and still be able to record some second channels (and even watch a very limited 3rd channel choice). Take a look at the back of the hdr it has 3 F type coax connections. The middle one is designed to allow the 2nd tuner to be fed using only 1 cable. You need a short length of coax with a f plug on each end and simply connect tuner 1 out to tuner 2 in.

What you can record together varies with your postcode but take a look at the following list (which is correct for a West Midlands postcode)

Any two channels in the same block can be recorded.

Any channel with the same number after it as either recording can also be viewed while recording two

You need a separate cable from the dish/LNB to feed the second tuner, you can't split the existing cable. (Your communal dish might be feeding a multiswitch which effectively distributes the one signal to multiple places, so there might be a spare output on that if you want a second feed into your flat. You'd have to speak to the landlord).

Your dish/LNB is pointed at 28E which is a location speficially for the UK so you cannot pick up foreign channels. You would need another dish pointed in another direction or a multi-LNB bracket on the dish to hold one or more extra LNBs that are pointed at different places, or a motorised dish so that it can be repositioned.

If you want to be able to receive channels from different places on the same cable, you need to combine them with a DiSEQC switch. I have twin-output LNBs pointed at 28E, 19E and 13E, which go through two DiSEQC switches. So I have both tuners on my Humax Freesat HDR fed with channels from all 3 satellite positions and I can access those channels in non-Freesat mode.

The advantage of not using a Freesat-branded box for the foreign satellites is that you don't have to switch back and forth between Freesat and non-Freesat modes, and facilities for setting up Favourites and re-ordering channels would be better.

But you have to sort out your dish and LNBs anyway if you want foreign channels, regardless of what type of receiver you have.

It's not his dish. The OP lives in a block of flats with a communal dish.

Hi,just wondered if I could use that to feed my other Humax hd freesat reciever?

Yes you can if you turn off power saving in sby. With the hdr off you should get 100% channels, when on or recording in sby same restriction in channels as tuner 2 on one cable.

If it's going to be in the same room this will interest you

As graham says, yes you can, but I've found the signal strength and quality to plummet from 90/100% respectively on the HDR to about 50/60% on the HD box, though it doesn't seem to affect the visual output of any channel.

You can add all the regional ITV channels in non-freesat mode.

If you mean why are they not on the freesat EPG, it's due to targetted regional advertising and its revenue. You do get in addition, ITV London on 977, ostensibly for Audio Description, but it also allows Scottish & Irish postcode users to get ITV HD.

Rgds.
