They have been using it since April when they did an April Fool podcast which was from a few years in the future - in this one, Matt Smith was supposed to be coming to the end of his time as the Doctor and they were reviewing Eleven's time before Twelve took over. It was pretty funny. I can't remember who they got this version of the theme tune from (someone on the Whomix site, perhaps) but it seemed popular, so they have been using it since.

I can't think why we would want that back. The series hit a definite low point with Sylvester McCoy gurning at the camera!

I wouldn't mind the original music back though. It had an eerie menace to it that the later versions totally missed.

I've read comments on YouTube and some even on here saying how "awful" the current Murray Gold version is, and I can't help but think "what the hell...?"

If only people could imagine how rubbish the theme could have been back in 2005 (some people predicting it'd have modern R&B drum beats, and others thinking it'd have lyrics!), I think Murray Gold done us proud.

Also, 6 years ago, if someone wanted me to imagine what an 'up-to-date' version of the Doctor Who theme tune would sound like, it would sound very much like Murray's series 4 theme. Big, boastful, excuberant and exciting yet unearthly. All the original motifs remain intact (no melodic 'shortcuts') and there are no new chord sequences in an attempt to be clever. Its the Doctor Who theme tune.

I wouldn't mind it staying for Series 5, actually, but with Steven taking over and Murray leaving its not likely

I really like the current one too - in fact all the themes since DW came back have been fab, but especially fond of the most recent one. The theme just makes me and feel all excited!

You see, this is exactly what I meant in my post! How the hell can Murray's theme tune be that bad to someone's ears? I've heard far worse renditions of the theme - although not worse enough to the point I compare them to an abortion

Murray's first draft would definately have suited the Eccleston series better, not that the version that replaced it was at all bad either.
