Snowboarding doesn't appeal to me, but each to his/her own.

Yes, there is a difference. Matthew Cutler (with Nicole) was one of the best - so your untrained eye is working well! Karen Hardy also has an exceptional record. Can't answer your question about Brian, but I'm sure others can.
Here is Brian's bio

And here are some others I found

Kristina's bio

Re comparing the pros, I think it really shows that Anton and Erin are ballroom specialists - their latin routines definitely lack sharpness and energy. Erin was well out-danced by Austin in the jive last year!
I think the only Ballroom Professional I've seen in recent years who dances Latin to a very high standard is Kym Johnson, the Aussie dancer from DWTS (and formerly the Aussie version). When I heard last year that SCD were signing up a new antipodean pro, I was really disappointed it wasn't Kym. I think she's fab.

Whatever Hayley's qualifications and achievements as a dancer were, the viewers could see her lagging behind both Kristina and Brian in the Trio routine to introduce them all last season. She was clearly out of her depth technically compared to them. But then so would Erin have been in a similar type of routine. The Latin Pros seem to always dance Ballroom much better than the other way around, and also create some wonderful choreography.
