Has anyone received a new vision box out of the blue?

The gist of the covering letter is that our old one may have issues and so the have sent a replacement. In the letter they suggest that we replace the box within the next 28 days and that we use that time to watch any recorded programs we may have.

I have not ever heard of any hardware problems with the V Box, so unsure why you would have been sent a new one.

yep, just got a knock on the door at 7:30 this morning, postman delivering box, i have had no issues, but it does say on letter a few boxes could develop problems in the future, so are being proactive in replacing boxes, and the boxes are the same, like i said at least it has happened better and quicker than the sky farce, at least we have not tried to be fobbed off with inferior boxes

From the horses mouth :-

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement and enhancement to the BT Vision service we have discovered an issue which in some circumstances can lead to a V-box to develop a fault where it does not start up and connect to the BT Vision service correctly. Although we have only seen a small number of cases we are taking the proactive step of replacing all V-boxes that we believe may be affected.

Affected customers will receive a package containing a letter, replacement V-box and an installation guide. Customers should replace their existing V-box and place the old V-box in the labelled bag provided and send it back to BT.

All letters have now been dispatched and all relevant customers have now been contacted.

or could it be a hardware revision after the box got exploited?

because theres 2 variants of BT boxes so far:

version 1 has 2 usb ports and a phone jack on the back.

Version 2 has 1 usb port on the back and no phone jack.

I have the latter.

so maybe if you got a replacement check to see if you were swapped from V1 to V2.

This is all guesswork to be honest. Also, I dont think there are any inferior boxes - surely they will all function in an identical fashion ? (except the faulty ones of course).

I also dont think the issue is directly connected to which type of box you have. The issue probably applies to just a very small batch made by Pace / Philips. This thread would be full of people who have received replacement boxes otherwise.

true but the guy above me noticed he has a different box.

its gotta be different inside, why remove 1 usb port and the phone socket?

must have different controller chipsets on them etc etc.

When you're making 100K boxes per production run the removal of £1 worth of components saves £100K (minus tooling cost etc). This sounds like a cost reduction measure to me - given that the system doesn't use these parts it makes sense to remove them if the economics add up. There may be other changes inside too.

Given that BT recover dead/unwanted boxes it wouldn't surprise me if there are refurbished units being issued - that could explain why some people have recently been given boxes with 1 and 2 USB ports etc. Does the system settings page give any clue as to the box version?

as being as these boxes are made by pace, i wonder if it is the same problem as the sky hd boxes had, and all it needs to fix it is a cable tie

another thought, what is to stop people like me who got a replacmant box just keeping the box they already had as well, and strip it down and use the hard drive, etc, as all they have done is sent with the replacemant box a pre paid envelope for us to return old box in, how would they know we had not sent it back

The letter does ask for it back and it is at no expense to yourself, so I guess if you chose not to then they could charge you for it....

As someone else mentioned, nothing like the farce we had with the Sky box!

... replacing something BEFORE it goes wrong, who would have thought

I've never read or even seen the instruction manual so in a nutshell what do you actually do with the USB port?

but that is the point, how would they know you have not returned it, all it says you have to do is drop it off at post office, you dont have to collect proof of postage or anything, you could just turned around and say royal mail have lost it, not as if that has not happened in the past

correct however the function is there just disabled. hence why the ports powered.

Anyone tried a USB keyboard in it? if Windows CE does as it's told then the keyboard should operate the menu. unless BT have disabled that too.

say on some forums a guy had enabled the MP3 player (hacked his bt box). albeit a bit broken, it did retreive CDDB data from the net and did get the album cover. its something media room supports. dunno why BT have disabled it.
