Largest Hard drive supported by the HDR
What is the largest hard disk currently supported by the Humax HDR?, 1.5 TB drives are now much cheaper and if you are recording lots of HD shows a larger drive is a must.
Can Humax increase the supported drives size by a firmware update to cope with say 2 TB? or is it fixed in hardware. (might need bob to answer this.) It would be in Humax's interest to do this because it makes the box more useful for customers, and saves a lot of warranties as once the box is opened to update the drive you lose the warranty. |

I had read elsewhere 1 TB was the max and 1.5TB drives did not work. Anyone currently managing to use a 1.5TB drive and what make and model? Thanks.

what bobcat posted last month:
While we don't support upgrading the drives, in theory if the device works with a 1TB it could easily support greater as well. It might have some yet unknown performance issues and the selection of the correct type of hard disk will improve reliability. Once again I am not endorsing anything, but just saying that 1TB is not a limit. |

Thanks Bobbyboy, I appreciate the input, though I had also read this for example:
MoneySaving Newbie Join Date: Mar 2009 Post Count: 1 Thanked 2 Times in 1 Post Default Tried 1.5tb seagate I tried a 1.5gb seagate with no luck. first tried installing to see how humax handled it - hit detected the drive, said it needed formatting, front display said "initialising partition" and I left it overnight. Needless to say this was still there in the morning. I called humax who said they didn't know if 1gig+ was supported, they suggested I formatted to fat32 from a pc which I did. Same results. I read this drive might have a firmware problem, analysed from seagate web site, but it said it was fine. In fact I can format on a pc and it does work fine. I'm returning to dabs and getting a 1tb which I believe works...would much prefer 2tb Also bob using the words "in theory" worries me!. I can get a 1.5TB drive from ebuyer for £76 now but would hate to lose the warranty on the HDR and still not be able to get the new drive working. So if anyone has had a good result with a 1.5TB drive please let me know. |

Located another failed 1.5TB install on avforums:
bully1957 New Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Posts: 5 My movie collection Thanks: Gave 3, Got 0 Re: Successful HDR Drive upgrade I installed a Seagate 1.5 tb drive, no luck, it says it's creating a partition but hours later nothing had happened. I replaced it with a 1 tb drive and 5 minutes later it's up and running. Both same manufacturer. |

You may be interested in this article - one of many about Seagate Barracuda problems.
This may or may not be relevant to what you're finding, but personally, if I was looking for a large HD, I'd be looking elsewhere. |

Yes I know about the Seagate issues, but these are normally drive failures during use, the drives should install and start working as normal.
No one managed to install a 1.5TB drive on a Humax HDR then? Might go with a 1TB Samsung Ecogreen, then as that might have a better chance of working. Anyone else managed a 1TB samsung Ecogreen install? |

I've just installed a Western Digital WD10EVDS 1Tb disk - it was too much of a risk to try anything bigger. For those who have bought 1.5Tb disks and have access to a PC with SATA sockets, it might be worth trying to format the disk under Linux (e.g. Ubuntu live CD).
The box creates 4 primary partitions, and all partitions contain a EXT3 filesystem. Partition 1 is about 2G and contains a file called reserve.info. Partition 2 is just over 100Mbytes and contains a directory, fsatepg, with the epg file, epg.dat, in it. Partition 3 is the biggie - most of the disk - and contains two directories, Movie and Video. Video is where all the recordings are. Partition 4 is 26G on my system, and contains two directories, Music and Photo. If you create Partition 3 at nearly 1.5 Tb, then the PVR may or may not accept it. If it doesn't then to avoid wasting the disk, just make partition 3 less than 1Tb and waste the top 500Gb of the disk. I would be surprised if the box wouldn't accept that. |

Tried Samsung 1.5TB - stuck on initializing partitions
I just tried a 1.5TB drive (because I had one to hand - just before it got sucked into my Drobo). No joy. Booted - asked to format, then seems to have got stuck creating partitions.

Thanks for the replies looks like a 1tb limit to me unless a firmware update allows larger drives. Maybe bob could comment?
