I was just wondering if Arlene Philips was ever bitchy or cruel to the contestants (I "flick" into SCD) and if so was that why she was sacked ie was it because she was too bitchy or was she quite placid, and could it be that she did not have enough "chaputz" to carry with the programme, I will be interested in what posters have to say about this?

Personally I doubt if these would be reasons for Arlene being replaced tbh.
I have objected to a few remarks made by Arlene but generally they have been on It Takes Two or in the newspapers rather than at the judging table, however last year she did one thing which I thought was really bad. After the final she was on BBC Breakfast with Tom and Camilla (who had won just incase anyone had forgotten) Arlene said that Rachel and Vincents showdance was 'awful' now I thought this was completely uneccessary and just plain nasty, talk about kicking someone when they are down, infact talk about kicking someone that you pretty much supported to win all the way through the series, so hypocritical too.
Having said all that I still think it is wrong to replace her with someone who is not qualified to do so.

How is it hypocritical? I thought Rachel deserved to win, as she was a much better dancer than Tom. However, her showdance WAS awful.

Personally I do think Arlene wasn't keen on Rachel for some reason (I wasn't a Rachel fan btw).
But I agree with Jan2555*GG* that most remarks made by Arlene to which I might have objected were not on the SCD show, but on ITT or in TV interviews.
In my view it doesnt matter if it was the worst showdance ever (oh no that was Lisa wasnt it ) it was completely uneccessary for her to say so at that stage, to me it was a bit spiteful and like she had suddenly decided that she wanted to nail her colours to Tom and Camilla, who I am pretty sure she didnt want to win all the way through the actual final. Maybe its just me but by that stage surely its just 'nicer' to be polite about everyone and draw a line under the series which was what she was there for.
I always got the impression that Arlene favoured Rachel so just shows how different people pick up different things.

Don't all the judges on reality shows do this? When someone wins like Tom or Darren or any people who aren't the judges favourite win they suddenly become the best thing since sliced bread the day after the final
I agree with the other poster that the remarks that usually caused problems were comments in papers and other tv show including ITT. Didn't Arlene said something about Ola and Pole dancer when Ola was dancing with Kenny?
In the first ITT after Kelly's tragic withdrawal it was obvious that Claudia wa plugging the party line, to focus on everything else but the Kelly story. Arlene broke rank and said how saddened she was. Claudia hastily moved on.
After the (four-tens) Matt D versus Gethin dance-off, Arlene (having awarded Matt D a ten) was the only one to dare choose Gethin by reason that Gethin improved in the dance-off but Matt D went backwards.

That's not really saying much - I thought Rachel's was ok actually not terrible not great but then again apart from Zoe's and Tom's most showdances tend to be vaguely disappointing probably because they are hyped up so much.

Agree about the Ola comment something Arlene says things before realising what she said but I remember the comment caused uproar on here.
As for the Kristina comment and other comments she made last year I think it is one of the reasons why Arlene isn't returning.

I didn't think it was terrible, but it was terribly safe and thats perhaps not what a showdance should be. I'm stunned Arlene called it 'awful'.

I don't think Arlene actually liked Matt DA very much actually reading between the lines she voted against him in both dance-offs he was in and was probably the angriest about him being voted through in meltdown week - I remember seeing a clip of her being interviewed on Jonathan Ross along with the other judges where she crossly described it as something along the lines of pathetic how he did the doe eyes at the public and they fell for it - or words to that effect whilst in the same program raving about Gethin's improvement. I think her favouring Gethin was more to do with the fact that she had more respect for him generally than Matt rather than her seeing more improvement in the dance-off. I'm a believer in that there's no such thing as an unbiased opinion - however that does include me so I could just be thinking that as it suits my own fan loyalties.
I agree with you about JS but I guess it fits a pattern of her losing in getting annoyed with people whom she thinks are coasting. Arlene can be pretty tough - you got that impression by what the Armchair panel of ex-Hot Gossip members said - and sometimes I think she thinks if people mess up it's because they aren't trying which I don't think is the case always. It still doesn't mean she deserved to be made redundant in favour of someone with less expertise than herself.
I really don't think Arlene was bitch. Although she didn't wrap anything up, she did offer constructive advice and despite her salivating over the likes of Ramps, Mark Foster and Gethin she didn't show favouritism when it came to marking them.
I found her voice a bit shrill and the alliteration embarrassing, although she did moderate that last year: but apart from the JS fiasco (and they were all guilty of contributing to that,) I found her fair and certainly nowhere as bitchy as Craig.

Arlene was the judge who told them straight their faults - and she lavished praise on them for correcting them. Some of them even got tears from her after their performance - she is so swept away with the dance, so in tune with it. She often threw down the gauntlet to the contestants. She just wanted them to be the best they could possibly be and I loved her for that honesty.

Quite. I actually wanted Arlene to be replaced, but not by someone who isn't qualified to judge.
In answer to the original question though, yes Arlene could be bitchy. She told Matt he danced with the sex appeal of a gnat... I found that quite a spiteful thing to say to someone on national TV. There were plenty of constructive ways to say what was missing from the dance without humiliating him.

i remember when she said to both fiona phillips and john sergeant that they didn't try hard enough, which seemed to upset both of them, because it was obvious that they both worked their socks off but they were just useless dancers.
i don't think she's a bitchy person though, she's just so passionate about the dancing and wants everyone to do well.

It was said in the most spitefully childish way and I thought that was jaw dropping unprofessional. No one really knew how to react when she said it because it was so unnecessarily bitchy.

64yo John Sergeant put himself at risk of a heart attack, twice lifting Kristina who is no waif.
Kate Garraway worked her stockings off, injured first in the foot then in the spine. After her paso danced with a dodgy back she approached the judges supported by Anton. She was ashen, trembling with pain. For once Brucie was not joking when he said, "Would you like to lie down?".
I watched Fiona Phillips on YouTube only. There seemed no sign of her working her socks off. Brendan was furious with her. By contrast Anton was full of admiration for Kate, and Kristina for John.

Ok I am the OP who put this post up, and I am very disappointed about the above quote. My intentions was quite simply as ask if Arlene was bitch and it has nothign to do with the replacement, I know she won the programme last year (I found out via this website) and I know that the other panel members have been bitchy (again via this website) and I just wanted to know where Arlene "stood" in the panel ie was she the Amanda Holden of SCD
