IMO,

'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' by The Script was one of the best songs of 2008. It was an amazing song.....yet it was beaten by the cheap 'I Kissed A Girl' song from Katy Perry. I was shocked that TMWCBM was beaten to the #1 spot by it. Very dissapointed and gutted for The Script.

Man In The Mirror by Michael Jackson was beaten by Evacuate The Dancefloor by Cascada a few weeks back.Nothing short or madness!

Way back in May 1970 an absolute classic track by the Moody Blues entitled 'Question' was kept at No. 2 bay by the utterly appalling 'Back home' 'sung' by the England World Cup squad . A travesty !

The most famous one is Vienna by Ultravox, beaten by Shaddap Your Face by Joe Dolce in 1981.

Why? It's such a better song! Cascada are so much better!

I Kissed A Girl might of been cheap but it was a whole lotta fun! I liked The Man Who Can't Be Moved just as much so i wasn't fussed either way that one went.

But yeah MJ losing out to Cascada was ridiculous!

If i remember rightly i think Coldplay's Speed of Sound got beat by Crazy Frog in 2005. But I suppose the fact that any song that lost out to that is bad enough.

I wouldn't say it was madness. Jackson got at least 20 of his songs in the top 100 (and a few in the top 20), plus he is STILL dominating the album charts. It would have been nice for him to get a #1 single but he kinda was #1 anyway at that point with the amount of singles and albums in the charts.

Way back in 1967 the Beatles' 'Strawberry Fields Forever/ Penny Lane' single was kept off the top spot by Englbert's 'Release Me'.

yeah i suppose a lot more people were (and still are) buying Jackson's albums rather than singles. it's just that when you think of it as the fact that a song like Evacuate The Dancefloor beat a song like Man In The Mirror it seems crazy to me!

Yeah, it was quite a suprise, tbh. I do like both songs but MITM has more of a "magic" feeling and one of my favourite MJ songs.

Back in 1973 Little Jimmy Osmond had the audacity to keep David Bowie's 'Jean Genie' and also T-Rex's 'solid gold easy action' away from the top spot. Both these classics peaked at No. 2

There was no accounting for taste in those days !

I know I'm going to get laughed off this thread but I remember back in 1991 when Bryan Adams was at number one for 16 weeks with Everything I Do I Do It For You it kept I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred off the top spot. In fact I'm Too Sexy spent 6 weeks at number 2 at the time. I absolutley loved Right Said Fred and that song back then.

Now with hindsight I realise what a pile of sh*t I'm Too Sexy is but I was 13 at the time and didn't know any better

I can't stand it, personally. But, if you like it that's cool too.

The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York

Probably the best Christmas song ever, and always beaten to to the top spot on three occasions I think. The first one being the Pet Shop Boys *cringe*

Their version of Always On My Mind deserved to be #1. It is a good version and a PSB classic. (yes I know it is a cover of Elvis though)

I don't know about great #2s being held off by crap #1s, what about a Janet's 'Together Again' which was beaten by Barbie Girl () and Teletubbies ()

For me it is bloody Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" keeping "All Right Now" by Free off the number one spot in the summer of 1970!

Madonna's "Ray Of Light" which I think was kept off the top spot by that dreadful All Saints cover of "Under The Bridge".

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought of this. I was GUTTED at the time as i was a massive new romantic fan and particularly a fan of Ultravox. Saw them 3 times live in 81/82/83 ish. Have NEVER forgiven Dolce

Mind you I suppose that Vienna is talked about MORE because of it, so it had its up side.

Rihanna's Unfaithful which was kept of by Shakira's Hip's Don't Lie
Unfaithful was her best song at the time while HDL just grated on me (thank God Bey overtook her)

Also Leona's Better In Time/Footprints in the Sand had to settle for #2 cos of Duffy's Mercy
