since espn will be on the same channel as setanta was , will we still have to put up with the pathetic picture quality ?

most probably, as it is linked somehow to the same bandwidth that channel 5 uses, i could not get setanta, as my vision box is upstairs, and for some reason although i can get channel 5 downstairs cant get it upstairs from same aeriel feed, so am not expecting much luck with espn, nevermind, hopefully things will change next spring when we convert from analogue transmission to digital

Well I glad your happy and as I said on other threads if you'd have waited until this was announced instead of speculating on the price and BT's ability to do a deal financially then we all could have been saved wasting our time countering your unfounded speculation.

Still small mercies at least you have had the grace to give a positive to this.

Nothing to do with 'good grace'..

if I'm right I'll say it, if I'm wrong I'll say it.

very simple.

Really is a great deal for BT to do this though, especially given the fact that TUTV have confirmed the 9.99 fee for their customers.

now they just need to market the h*ll out of it and advertise.!! Get people hooked in before the EPL games drop to 23.

I agree it is a great deal and one as you rightly say that needs to be built upon before the drop to 23 matches in 10/11 season.

Maybe ESPN might do a deal with Sky to take on another 23 and Sky could then claim that there are alternatives or perhaps by then Ofcom will have compelled Sky to offer their channels at a fair wholesale price to all.

ESPN is currently available to new customers subscribing to a BT Vision Value Pack for 12 months. Prices start at £7.34 per month for the first three months moving to £14.68 per month thereafter. A one-off viewing card charge of £9.78 applies. Freeview coverage is required to receive ESPN.

I suspect you've found the one flaw in the plan...

you can't.

bt vision is vod only

live channeels are via freeview so no hd there.

there could be ESPN HD downloads. say a re-run of them matches in hd. thats possible.

So basically, BT Vision find it acceptable and exciting that they are providing a Freeview channel that will not provide HD or even a 24 hour linear service . The main "attraction" being 46 Premier matches reducing to 23 next year. Can't wait !!!!

I presume the fact that Sky customers will have to pay £9 for it whilst BT Vision customers with a package get it for free is not a selling point for you?

It certainly will be for BT!

You're not Matterhorn in disguise are you? (although he? seems to have been forced into a humiliating climb down today )

There aren't ANY HD channels on digital terrestrial at the moment, although there will be a limited number in the future . If you see HD as essential, then buy a dish or subscribe to Virgin. The channel isn't a 24 hour channel, Setanta wasn't either, that's nothing to do with BT, that's just the way it is.

I really liked Setanta, especially the non-league coverage and last year the FA Cup and England games. At the moment neither of them look like being available on ESPN UK, which in my opinion is a big shame. I suppose there is still time for things to change though. I am not fussed about American Sport and never watched any foreign football games on Setanta. For that reason, for me, ESPN UK doesn't look as good as Setanta did, but that has nothing to do with it not being a 24 hour channel or broadcasting in HD. I certainly wouldn't pay extra to get it, but it is better than nothing and I shall wait and see how things develop.

Here's some hard facts for you sunshine. BT are not providing, producing or running this channel. What they are doing is giving away EPSN subscription cards to it's subscription customers for nothing, yes that's right - free !!.

Loving this !!

Quite happy it is free.

Just need ESPN to move to a channel with more bandwidth.

Will be interesting to see what comes off the VOD football.
Would hope to see testing of "live" OD football if BT are serious about providing Sky channels etc.

Would be best to get it running on a small scale early doors.

Signal strength should improve which could mean that your upstairs problem disappears, depending on your wiring, but there is still too much crammed onto the multiplex, so image quality will still be pants no matter how strong the signal is. Bad compression affects moving and complex images more than static and with a sports channel you're talking constant panning across a mottled surface. Even the advertising tends to move about these days.
