No idea how it is a step too far, this is just crazy talk I'm afraid.

BT have announced first leg matches

All eight available on Red Button

Valencia v Atletico on main channel

Once again only one match - Spurs at 6

So they can have a build up to the big match

Man U have appealed to UEFA re 6 pm ko

Would they get higher overall viewing figures if Man Utd v Liverpool clashed with Spurs v Dortmund?

You would of thought so considering its Man Utd v Liverpool in a knock out for a trophy they both now want to win, yes Tottenham have a attractive game but i doubt as good as looking as Man Utd.

And because of that reason i very much doubt they would allow it.

But the appeal of a European Competition is to see who our English clubs do against EUROPEAN Opposition !!!

Why ask the question if you don't like the rather obvious answer?

Man Utd ask UEFA to move the game to 8.05pm.
UEFA say they will only do it if it's unsafe to play it at 6pm.
Trafford Council say it would be unsafe because Man Utd can't guarantee enough stewards, security or medial staff.

Am I just far too cynical for my own good?

The fact Trafford council are involved now and with (AFAIC) very valid reasons to object to 6pm, UEFA i hope listen and not be inclined to say no purely because of pride!

Even the +1 time difference aside, how come those European countries with 'big' teams don't seem to be bothered/moan or get a council in about it for their 6pm (7pm) legs - Some like Dortmund who are getting huge crowds. People still travelling or making it to the game for the earlier evening KO with no fuss.

Still think there is an element of arrogance about this.

There wouldn't be an issue if UEFA didn't have such stupid kickoff times for their competition. I, for one, hope it gets moved to 8:05pm.

Taking everything into account there are few times, if any, the circumstances will fall together in the same way as they do for this particular occasion.

6pm is slap-bang in the middle of Manchester peak-time - 7pm wouldn't be across Europe.

The close proximity of the two cities, plus the animosity that exists between the fans, is a major concern, Anybody who's been to a match between the two teams will instantly understand the safety concerns.

The location of Old Trafford causes traffic headaches at the best of times. Add in a day of festivities on top of normal peak-time traffic and, again, anybody who's been to Old Trafford will understand the concerns.

How many of the big European teams you mention could guarantee 76,000 for a fixture? The majority of the fans - home and away - will converge on the stadium very close to a 6pm kick-off. It would be more naturally dispersed for a later one.

Policing is required in much greater numbers for this fixture. I'm sure many leaving either stadium following a game between these two have oftentimes been grateful for the increased police presence; without it there would've been carnage on more occasions than I care to remember.

I have to say, with the greatest of respect to your PoV, arrogance is a strange accusation given the circumstances.

I think you need to know Manchester a bit on this one and where OT is. You can't really comment if not TBH

I've been told by a steward at Arsenal that the stadium doesn't open until 18:30 for midweek games because there is always a pressure on getting enough stewards to the ground. So I can imagine that the concern over having enough stewards in place for a 18:00 kick off at Old Trafford could be a problem.

Knowing the traffic congestion in Manchester on a normal weekday, let alone St Patricks day it is inconceivable the tie wont be moved to 8.05.
