England has tonight overtaken Italy in the table for the 5 years to 2016/17 - ie with the rest of this season + next season still to go.

Man City won 2 points tonight (one for the draw and one for reaching the QF) - and those 2 points - which convert to 0.25 points for England (ie when divided by 8) - take us just ahead of Italy.

Literally every CL or EL game played by an English or Italian club for the rest of this season and next season is going to be critical for determining who finishes 3rd at the end of 2016/17.

2016/17 table as of tonight:

Obviously that table will decide how many places are up for grabs in the 2017-2018 season, for the 2018-2019 champions league and Europa League.

Yes, indeed!

It seems to me as though England have had an advantage often by about 2 points per season. Last season, was an exception, with Italy clearing getting the better of England.

I would be very surprised if England lost their 4th champions league place.

However I don't think teams in the Europa League will care about the coefficient. And why should they? (Although the question of team selection, is probably for the football threads, rather than the broadcasting threads.)

It was reported that the PL recently discussed giving additional performance payments to clubs in the Europa League.

ie for each win or round progression in the EL, the clubs would receive prize money from the PL (in addition to the money they receive from UEFA).

If they make that money serious then it might well make a difference.

Will be very interesting to see if PL introduce this for next season - because they know that performance next season is going to be vital.

NB. Also factor in Leicester going straight into the CL group stage - I haven't checked but imagine quite likely they will be in pot 4 - they could well perform very poorly - potentially coming bottom with very few points - and not even dropping down into the EL. That will put added pressure on the England points score next season.

They changed the seeding so Leicester will be Pot 1 if they win the Premier League.

And rightly so.

Because teams like Spurs and Liverpool (not including this season !! ) were pushing for at best a 4th Place in the League to get into CL

If they dont do well in Europa then in future their target goes up to 3rd place

So they should care about Englands co efficient

Not as bad as this season with points being divided by more teams and West Ham and Southampton both failing to get into the Europa League group stage

Exactly. As a Milan fan I've seen the impact that losing a Champions League place can have in Serie A. Arguably neutrals would say it makes it more interesting but the longer you only have 3 teams making the Champions League, the harder it gets. Especially when the third placed team (Lazio) didn't even get through the qualifying round last time. To see Serie A with only 2 teams in the group stage is a sad thing IMO.

But my point is, why would West Ham or Southampton care about it?

Yeah but Leicester City are surely not going to win the league. Surely not? They will collapse (like everyone has said they would all season) and the usual big 4 will get into the champions league as usual.

I admit they are leaving their collapse very late into the season, (we have had other teams doing very well, but collapse, and the same will happen with Leicester.)

You are always very cynical aren't you, I'm guessing u are one a few who aren't enjoying Leicester this season

Not quite as spectacular but Southampton under Pochettino had a surprising start and collapsed in December

It DID look like Leicester would follow that route

BUT

I dont quite think so now....

I am not sure exactly who you mean by the usual big four but I will just point out that Chelsea are currently 23 points behind Leicester with 8 games left. Liverpool are 19 back and Man Utd are 16 back. That would have to be some collapse from the foxes for any of these teams to get above them!

BT Sport Showcase is scheduled to show Sevilla v FC Basel tomorrow night - the 8pm game on BT Sport 2.

I was half-expecting them to be showing Tottenham v Borussia Dortmund on Showcase, given that this game has been shifted onto BT Sport 1, which is free online to all BT broadband customers (and thus now shows very little live premium content barring top flight English, Scottish and rugby union matches).

Yes and no!

Obviously Leicester City have had a good season, and I'm enjoying it as much as any other neutral fan is.

But I don't think Leicester City will win the league. Nerves, lack of experience, etc, will surely play a part as they get closer to the finish line. (I agree everyone has being saying this, all season with them, and so far it hasn't happened. But now everyone is putting pressure on them to win the league.)

The fixtures are very much in Leicester's favour.
March is very kind and they've already won 2, whereas Spurs have it really tough. Add in City and Arsenal playing really poor its looking more and more unlikely they'll be caught.

As for the usual big 4 getting into the CL, you'll get very long odds on Man Utd & Chelsea gatecrashing.

I must admit I did mean 4 of the big 6.

Regarding Leicester City the fixtures being in their favour is also meaning there is pressure to win them. They have had a fantastic season but it would not totally surprise me if they got only 9 or 10 points from the last 9 games.

If they only got 10 it would leave Spurs needing 16 from...
Bournemouth (H)
Liverpool (a)
Man Utd (H)
Stoke (a)
West Brom (H)
Chelsea (A)
Southampton (H)
Newcastle (a)

16 points will be a good haul from that set of fixtures

Re the coefficient - well, so much for Juventus giving Italy a nice little boost tonight. The last minute goal from Bayern to take it to extra time and subsequent 2 goals for Bayern will seemingly knock Juve out and prevent them picking up a few useful points, giving England a little helping hand to keep their places.

Question is can Spurs get what would probably need to be almost full points from those fixtures and Leicester tend to put in big performances against Man U Everton and Chelsea's of this world but anything could happen but Chelsea in the champions league would need a ridiculous miracle but who knows that's why we love football and watch it so much on to
