You suggesting that BT shouldnt have shown the Man U match then?
Judio

Of course not.
I was talking about their 4th and 5th choices.
The posts above are saying who would watch another match at the same time as a British club

A tint proportion of the audience, hence BT would be unduly worried about which ones are on. As already said, find a way of watching any of the others online if you are that desperate. The choice available now is much better than it was 2 years ago.

BT seem to have been focussing their attentions on a select few teams - so Schalke shown twice, Ajax and Bilbao likewise. But we've seen nothing of Villarreal, Roma, Anderlecht or St. Etienne to name but a few other teams possibly worthy of coverage at some point in the competition.”

Ha ha! As a Feyenoord fan I'm not complaining about our match being on but realistically there is no merit whatsoever in showing this match. Staggering lack of insight into what might interest people shown here by BT. Still no sign of the like of Villarreal, Fiorentina, Anderlecht, St. Etienne, Shakhtar, Braga...all potentially interesting teams to show. Anyway I shall be shouting for Feyenoord and then shouting at Ajax!

Is it a staggering lack of insight? Assuming that Manchester United, Southampton, and Dundalk are always going to be shown (which they will be) we are only talking about the 4th and 5th choice matches.

Furthermore there probably is more interest in the other teams in the same group as Manchester United and Southampton, simply because of the fact that they are in the same group.

Outwith some of us football geeks on here if there is anyone watching the foreign UEL games, most likely to get views or secondary views (on a tablet etc alongside a main game) is the other game in Man Utd/Southampton's group... Thought it was pretty obvious.

The BT sport app is great for that.
Often find myself watching the last 5 minutes of some remote EL tie because I need one team to score to get my ACCA up!

I think we may have some differing viewpoints on this one. But I'm not for one minute suggesting that the like of Man Utd or Southampton shouldn't be shown if their fixtures don't appear in the top five of some made up order of merit in my mind! Of course, the English teams, and indeed other British and Irish teams should be always shown regardless of their opponents and the context of the match within the group.

I also understand there is some worth in showing the matches from the other group especially when progress through the group for the English side is dependant on the outcome of the other match. However in the earlier match rounds if you only show the like of Sparta-Beer'sheva to allow the odd Southampton fan the chance to find out the score then save yourself the hassle of transmitting the match and the bother of getting a commentator in and just show a screen with the score on and how many minutes have been played. Because fans are going to just dip in and out...

A Southampton or Man Utd fan that starts watching the game at minute 1 and has watched the entire match will be appraised of developments in Prague, Rotterdam, Istanbul or Beer'sheva (is that even a place, Israeli geography not one of the subjects I consider myself a geek on! ) by goal pop ups etc.

I don't see BT changing this anytime soon - maybe I should just embrace the chance to immerse myself in Hapoel Beer'sheva or Sparta Prague's Europa League campaign. Maybe this is an opportunity to wallow on more football geekdom!?

It is a place if you put the apostrophe in the correct place: Be'er Sheva.
It's 40 miles south-west of Jerusalem and if the fourth-largest City in Israel.

Extraordinary knowledge there, sir!

I read an article about them on the Guardian prior to their tie against Celtic as even for someone who considers themselves relatively au fait with world football affairs I couldn't profess to a great deal of knowledge about them.

Indeed Israeli football as a whole is a bit of a blur of Hapoels and Maccabis!

A few months ago (Page 113) we were discussing the UEFA co-efficient situation.

Statement of the obvious, but Leicester have done the coefficient ranking a lot of good, Spurs not so much.

In more detail though (since the last update

England: Champions League:

Leicester City - into the last 16 as group winners, so get bonus points for reaching last 16.
Arsenal - Also in last 16.
Tottenham - Out.
Manchester City - They successfully qualified into the group stage from the playoff round. In the group stage itself their fate has yet to be decided, but they look likely to go through to the last 16.

Italy: Champions League:

Juventus - Already through to last 16
Napoli - Fate yet to be decided, but they look likely to go through.
Roma - lost out in final qualifying round, and did not get the bonus points from the group stage.

The Europa League does not matter so much, because whilst teams do get points for winning and drawing matches, there are no bonus points available.

Overall then looking very good this season for England.

Ranking Points earned this season

Germany 70 from 7 clubs so 10 points
Spain 67 from 7 clubs so 9.571
England 62.5 from 7 clubs so 8.928
Italy 48.5 from 6 clubs so 8.083

You get 5 bonus points for qualifying so we have already had Arsenal and Leicester

Man City look likely to add another 5

It doesnt matter anyway, the new system will mean the top 4 clubs get the full allocation and there is no danger of England slipping down to 5th anytime soon.

I don't get why English teams perform poorly in European competitions. I mean, I get it that the Europa league finals last year had unfair results (Handballs unseen).

But in general, when we see the draws between a Spanish side and an English side or a German side and an English side, we always write off the English side.

"Poorly" as in only having the third best record over the last five years?

Wasn't the "new" system supposed to be being reviewed and put on hold with the new UEFA Secretary-General?
