Yes, they've been doing it in the early rounds. But is there a source that says it's been done in the later stages, i.e. after the group phase?

Yes, the last time was in January 1981, when they were both drawn at home in the FA Cup. Here's more...

As it points out, since then the Police have refused to allow both teams to play at home at the same time.

The Original Last 16 draw

Have a look at Bolton

The second leg was in Lisbon but Benfica also were due to play in Lisbon as well so they switched and played at home
against Getafe on March 6th

Lets hope UEFA swap the home and away legs around its the sensible thing to do if it happens!

Probably best to wait for the kick-off times to be announced before guessing who will get what.

...and knowing the pick order would help.

I'm trying to figure out how to predict the kick-off times. Let's assume the following preconditions:

- Teams that play their 1st leg at 18:00 will play the 2nd leg at 20:05.
- When a country has two teams in the competition (ENG, ESP, FRA, POR, BEL), they must not play at the same time. Germany has three teams; Hamburg & Bremen have been chosen by the TV stations not to play at the same time.
- Kazan must play their home leg at 18:00.
- English and Portuguese teams should preferably play their home legs at 20:05.

The 1st leg fixtures could look like this:

18:00 Hamburg v Anderlecht
18:00 Rubin v Wolfsburg
18:00 Atlético v Sporting
18:00 Lille v Liverpool
20:05 Benfica v Marseille
20:05 Panathinaikos v Standard
20:05 Juventus v Fulham
20:05 Valencia v Werder
(Reversed kick-off times for the 2nd leg)

There's only two drawbacks: Fulham would have the home leg at 18:00, and Panathinaikos would have to play at 22:05 local time.

I don't think there is anything about home and away legs being at different times. Clearly if Liverpool had either been away in the first leg, or not in the tournament at all, Everton would have kicked off at 8.05 in both legs in this round.

How do you get to those predictions regarding TV picks for the Round of 16 man utd 09?

Five's first pick could quite easily be Juventus-Fulham in the first leg. It depends on which of the two matches that involve English teams kick off in the evening. Uefa haven't announced that yet and I'm sure the English teams will be divided into the two time slots. And the first choice for Five in the second leg will be the other tie with English involvement, which will also kick off in the evening a week later.

And if we continue to have double headers on ITV and ESPN in the Round of 16 (for each legs), why have you got 4 matches on ESPN?

I would guess Five would take the two 8.05pm ties involving the English teams over the two legs.

The two 6pm matches involving the English teams over the two legs would be shared between ESPN and ITV (depending on who has second and third choice), which leaves three other matches that could be shown. (Will ITV do a double-header when in one of those weeks they won't have any English team?)

For the other three games, it depends on the kick-off times. I would personally pick in the following order:

(1) Benfica-Marseille, (2) Valencia-Bremen, (3) Atletico-Sporting, (4) Humburg-Anderlecht, (5) Rubin-Wolfsburg*, (6) Panathinaikos-Standard.

* The first leg in Russia may have an early afternoon kick off and may therefore be an additional live game on ESPN?

In one of tonight's matches (can't remember which), the commentator said Liverpool would've played at home in the first leg of Round of 16 if Everton qualified.

How's that? UEFA decides, not the clubs. In the group stage, British and Portuguese clubs (being the only countries in the GMT zone) had most of their home matches at 20:05 but most of their away matches at 18:00.

In what parallel universe did my post suggest otherwise?

Yes, that's the unknown factor in my prediction. If it gets an afternoon kick-off, it might still "count" as a 20:05 match.

What relevance does that have to my post?

I'm talking about this round i.e. the one completed last night.

There seems to be an automatism of reversing the kick-off times, for TV reasons. It's basically the same as in the Champions League: When Arsenal in on Tuesday and Chelsea on Wednesday in the 1st leg, it's the other way round in the second leg.

By early afternoon I mean before the usual 6pm (UK time) kick off, like their home match in the Round of 32 was. Why would that count as an 8.05pm game and what would that affect?

(Its unthinkable for Five to pick that game as a first pick and with ITV... very unlikely! And as ESPN have the rights to the "remaining games", they could easiy show it as an additional game.)

That's because the Champions League has the luxury if two days.

I can assure you - both Liverpool and Fulham will play their home legs at 8.05.

None, I guess

I just threw it in as it was discussed earlier in this topic.

But back to your post... Everton's first leg kicked off at 6pm didn't it?

Difficult to explain... UEFA might use this as a kind of "joker" in order to have all the other fixtures as they want them to be. Although this would mean only three matches actually kicking off at 20:05, which is rather unlikely because it's the more attractive timeslot in most countries.

So just forget about it.

Does anyone have a brick wall I can borrow...?

Just read my post again will you. I'm not repeating myself when it was so incredibly easy to understand in the first place.

Both of them have the 2nd leg at home, so they'd be playing at the same time. TV stations would not be amused.

Not exactly a "luxury".

Yes, let's cater for TV and the supporters can go jump off the nearest high building...
