From a selfish point of view ESPN, Five and ITV4 must really be hoping that Portsmouth fail in their attempts to get a UEFA Licence for next season: because assuming Villa beat Everton this evening and went on to finish ahead of Liverpool in the PL table, Pompey would be England's third entrant into the Europa League next season, rather than Liverpool.

Either that, or Liverpool win the trophy next month and get in automatically.

I would guess they will - Liverpool = 3m viewers for them, Fulham not so much.

They have already chosen the second leg on FIVE

Fulham away leg on ESPN Home on ITV 4

Come on Fulham, at least you entered this competition
and were not rejected at Christmas into it

We could have FOUR clubs ONLY if the team that wins the Europa League has not finished in the Top 7

Pompey have to prove that they do not have any long outstanding debts to get in

Aren't the Revenue owed 10m plus !!!

They have no chance of winning a place

As things stand...

Man City and Villa would qualify for next season's Europa League.

If Liverpool or Fulham were to win this season's Europa League, they would qualify.

If Portsmouth's licence appeal was to be dismissed, Liverpool would qualify.

If Portsmouth's licence appeal was to succeed, Portsmouth would qualify.

If Portsmouth's licence appeal was to be dismissed and Liverpool were to win this season's competition, Liverpool and Everton would qualify.

If Portsmouth's licence appeal was to be dismissed and Fulham were to win this season's competition, Fulham and Liverpool would qualify.

If England were to retain their status in the top three of UEFA's Fair Play League and anybody but Fulham win this season's Europa League, Fulham would qualify.

If England were to retain their status in the top three of UEFA's Fair Play League and Fulham win this season's Europa League, Burnley would qualify.

That is the situation with how qualification stands for English Clubs; given the Barclays Premier League table as of 18:00 on 18/04/2010, and with the standings in the most recent publications of the UEFA and English Fair Play Leagues, published in December 2009 and March 2010 respectively.

Also worth pointing out that Tottenham or Manchester City (whoever finishes fourth in the EPL) will quite probably come up against Celtic, Werder Bremen, Sevilla or Sampdoria (as things currently stand in those clubs' respective leagues), meaning that Tottenham/Man City's progression into the Champions League group stages is by no means guranteed.

If England's fourth placed side were to be knocked out of the Champions League qualifying, they would be automatically demoted into the final qualifying round for the Europa League; but not inhibiting the respective Europa League campagins of those English teams already qualified.

How many Scottish clubs will qualify? Three?

Yes .

If Ross County win the Scottish Cup then, based on the SPL table as it stands, it will be (team entering latest first): Ross County, Dundee Utd and Hibernian.

If Dundee Utd win the Scottish Cup: Dundee Utd, Hibernian and Motherwell.

Not quite. They would go right into the EL group stage.

As for the fair-play rankings: They tend to change a lot over a few months, and they are influenced by a lot of factors (e.g. fans' behaviour and also women's matches) so nobody can really predict how they're going to like at the end of the season. In most years, the Scandinavian countries end up in the Top 3 anyway.

Two via the league: Dundee United and Hibernian.

In addition, either Ross County or Motherwell (depending on who wins the Scottish FA Cup).

No Scottish teams qualify directly into the Europa League group stages, unless Celtic are knocked out of the Champions League at the final qualifying stage.

All of this assuming that the order of the teams in the SPL table doesn't change.

Rangers could be forced into playing two CL qualifying rounds as well if the Title Holder spot is needed.

This doesn't look likely but it would happen if Lyon win the CL title and fail to qualify via their domestic league.

Wouldn't Lyon qualify instead of one of the teams in their domestic league? I think this was the rule that Liverpool got UEFA to bend so that they could get in despite finishing 5th. Somehow I doubt UEFA would let that happen again.

That rule was modified (or clarified) after the Liverpool/Everton case. It only applies to clubs from the top 3 countries (ENG, ESP, ITA at the moment) because UEFA wants to prevent any country having more than 4 CL starters.

France is ranked 5th, so they would get an extra spot.

Now that Pompey's appeal has been officialy rejected, things are a lot clearer.

And prospects are a lot brighter for whicher of ITV4/ESPN has the choice of Villa or Man City, rather than Villa or Pompey!

Don't forget Celtic, Ross County and potentially Everton, Fulham or Burnley.

A slightly pedantic point, but it's "potentially" Ross County as well. They're only in Europe if they win the Scottish Cup. Indeed, Celtic are only "potential" as well because they need to drop out of the Champions League first.

Why would Everton or Burnley be in? Fair Play league?

Burnley through the fair play league IF Fulham win the Europa League this season. Everton through being eighth in the EPL if Liverpool win the Europa League this season.

Even though neither Chelsea nor Portsmouth will qualify via the FA Cup?
KarlHyde
23-04-2010
Yes, Chelsea's/Pompey's berth is already replaced by the 7th placed EPL club.

And the "title holder spot" is only granted by UEFA for the winning club itself, not for the country. So if Liverpool (or Fulham, for that matter) win the Europa League and finish below 7th place, they would get the additional UEFA title holder spot as a life-line. If they finish inside the top 7, UEFA does not use the title holder spot.

The same goes for the Champions League - which could become relevant for Rangers because they are the club that would benefit from the title holder spot not being used, as explained in post #536.

Good news for Rangers: With Bayern reaching the CL final, it's now certain that the title holder spot won't be used, so the Scottish champion has direct access to the group stage.

Celtic's situation stays the same: They start in the 3rd qualifying round. If they survive that, they're guaranteed to play either the CL group phase or EL group phase.

It's not live on LFC TV (sadly). It's on Primetime PPV instead.
