It would be good but if too many UK teams are in it they can't all be shown.

Bring some red button like Sky's CL coverage. Is there any highlights of tonights matches?

No. The Europa League isn't centrally controlled until Matchday 1, so anyone wanting to do highlights of tonight would have to negotiate with and buy rights from 35 different sources. (And then have the resouces to record and edit 35 feeds)

Not on any UK channel and just one channel from Romania - joined AFTER an earlier game finishes so possibly not at KO. Though the start time seems to have been put back to 8 pm to help avoid overlap. (At least according to Sky - two newspapers including the Manchester Evening News still show it as 7.45!)

Apparently no UK channel offered enough money to the Romanians.

Funnily enough, the Romanians were under the illusion that because Manchester City were paying way over market value for players, that UK broadcasters would do the same for the first leg of a Man City qualifier.

Were ITV considering showing it?

So a summary of coverage at the moment involving British clubs:

1st legs:

Manchester City is not on TV at the moment!
Aston Villa are on ITV4.
Liverpool are on ITV1 and Setanta Ireland.
Celtic not on TV.
Motherwell not on TV.
Dundee United not on TV.
The New Saints not on TV.

2nd legs:

Manchester City?
Aston Villa is on ITV4.
Liverpool are on ESPN.
Celtic are on Premier Sports and Setanta Ireland.
Motherwell are not on TV.
Dundee United are not on TV.
The New Saints are on S4C.

Is that right? I think it is from various bits of information in this topic.

Have channel 5 not considered a match considering they are the main broadcaster of the competition once the group stages start?

Defnitely dissapointing that we haven't got either the Dundee United or Motherwell match on via BBC Scotland, but I expect their absence revolves around the question of how much the clubs are asking for rights. Ditto: Man City at Timisoara tonight...

Overall it's a tournament that probably merits more coverage, especially once we get longer into the tournament. If memory serves all four quarter finals kicked off at 20.05 giving very little scope for the fans to watch multiple matches. It would have been better if they'd been staggered for 18.00 and 20.05 as the games are in the early stages.

Still its market forces that determine these things

Unless you played them on different nights, you'd never be able to watch all four live anyway, with them potentially going to extra time and penalties.

Once the Europa League proper starts, you will at least get a minimum of five live games a week.

I'd just been thinking about that -- in the unlikely event that all six British teams qualify next week (and, worse, Spurs drop down as well), what would happen with regards to broadcasting?

Would it simply be a case of some teams not being covered?

There are already seven teams, which would make eight with Spurs. They would all be shown, but where would depend on the scheduling of them.

Of course if there were eight British clubs, there would be a significant chance of some of them being drawn against each other.

There's radio commentary on the Man City match on the BBC website - from BBC Manchester.

Unless Utrecht perform a Spurs-like recovery in the next 45 minutes, I can't see many people bothering to tune into that second leg.

Manchester City is finely poised. The Romanians are actually pretty good, but not sure they'd be as strong at Eastlands.

I wonder whether the *next* contract, when that comes, might complete the circle and bring the Europa League qualifiers into the central contract as happened with the Champions' League?

Champions League qualifiers aren't in the central contract, only the playoffs.

Other than semantics, what exactly is the difference between a "qualifier" and a "play-off"?
RobinCarmody

I think arius means that the last round before the group stages are the "play-offs", and everything before that (in which English clubs are not involved, though Scottish clubs often are) are the "qualifiers".

Yes, I know; my query was more a general (and somewhat rhetorical) one.

There isn't really a difference, its just UEFA make it sound more interesting etc by using the word playoff. For most of the rest of us it would be called a 4th qualifing round.

Now that we've seen tonight's first leg results, I think we can say it is extremely unlikely that eight British clubs will make the group stage.

It says on the ITV sport website that Trabzonspor v Liverpool will be on ITV4.

I think it was supposed to be but now it isn't. The rights for these games are distributed by the home side so ITV 4 probably got trumped by ESPN after they thought they'd sealed the deal.

The Man City 2nd leg game is live on British Eurosport.

I think ITV pulled out when they realised it would be kicking off at 6pm UK time.

I wonder if the coverage from Turkey will be in widescreen or not.

Is the correct answer.
I don't think the Turks appreciated that a game not in prime time wasn't worth as much.

IMO, the Europa League is an experiment in whether a 6-round group stage with centralized rights featuring clubs below the biggest 20 or so in Europe can generate TV money. If the experiment proves there's demand, then I think we'll see the CL expand to 48 in the group stage.

Given the growth of multichannel TV throughout Europe since the last CL expansion, there's room for more CL games without diluting viewing figures I would imagine. It also neatly allows more UEFA members to get multiple clubs in.
