But Spurs are only 5 points behind Man City

They still have to play each other as well

Spurs could also win the Champions League and finish 5th, meaning 5 English teams in CL and 6th gets Europa. Unless UEFA have changed the rules again.

If Spurs won the champions league and finish 5th in the league. The team finishing fourth in the league will lose the champions league spot and go into the europa league instead

And also we would only have three in the Europa League still

Yes UEFA changed the rules after Liverpool got in by the back door after winning in 2005

If you think the chances are remote, log on to Betfair immediately.

You can back Man City at 1.4 to make the top 4. ie:

- Bet £100

- If they make top 4 you win £40, ie you get back £140

- If they don't make the top 4, you lose £100

Odds suggest they have a 71% chance of making the top 4.

Absolutely lush picture on ESPN HD. Superb.

ITV4 HD says HD but no way is it. Thankfully watching the Man City game (and March Madness at the same time!)

ITV's studio is HD and the Rangers game will be HD. Spartak v Ajax is up-resed as there isn't an HD feed available.

From the next round, all UEL games must be made available in HD.

As an aside - why don't STV show the Rangers match tonight (given itv have the rights), or is this mired in the stv / itv row?

ITV owns the rights, not STV.

Agreed - and I'm not an expert on the relationship between itv and STV. So is the key difference say that on the Champions League, itv and STV jointly bought the package and in the europa itv bought the rights for the whole of the UK alone?

When Rangers got to the final, I am sure STV showed matches?

ITV can only show Europa League games they have rights to on ITV 4, which is available in Scotland anyway isn't it?

Different deal, then, before the competition was sold as one big lump.

Putting it very simply the rights to Channel 3 (ITV1/STV/UTV) UCL matches are ITV Network rights and include the opportunity for regions to opt in or out of certain games and are quite different to those for Europa League ITV4 matches which are national rights, at this stage of the competition anyway.

In regards to the Brazil v Scotland match, STV will be showing it.

Itv network bought the champions league rights
Itv plc bought the europa league rights

Different competition, different contract.

There are no regional opts allowed under the current contract.

I bet ESPN / Five / ITV 4 are loving this. Man City out; Liverpool and Rangers on the verge of joining them.

.....and yep, they're all out.

If I'm reading the Uefa rules correctly, then if Chelsea or Spurs won the Champions League and finished fifth, they would go into the Champions League along with the top 3 and the fourth placed team would qualify for the Europa. If,however,Chelsea or Spurs won the Champions League and finished sixth, they would go into the Champions League along with the top 3 and the teams finishing fourth and fifth would both go into the Europa.

Personally, I'll rather enjoy seeing the games we'll presumably see now, especially considering the inherent ironies of a channel owned by Richard Desmond having to show teams from continental Europe playing each other, though I appreciate that in ratings terms Five, ITV4 and ESPN won't see it that way.

When matches from the predecessor competition were sold individually, if all the British teams went out the later stages would usually be ignored by British TV, and the old two-legged final frequently wasn't shown (the last such final in 1997 was only on Eurosport), although I remember Channel 4 showing both legs of the Lazio-Atletico Madrid semi-final live in 1998, and the BBC also had highlights of the second leg of Spartak Moscow-Inter Milan that year, before the first single-game final was shown live.

It now makes it a disinteresting competition for me until the final.

The irony you mention did occur to me at full time
Does anyone know, arius perhaps, whether Five have to show their games on the main channel, or if they can relegate them to 5*, as the ratings will undoubtedly not be great?

Europa League quarter-final qualifiers:
Benfica, Braga, Dynamo Kiev, FC Porto, FC Twente, PSV Eindhoven, Spartak Moscow, Villarreal

I believe so, although I'm not certain.
They do still get first pick though so it's not all bad for C5: the UEL has some attractive sides still in it, including PSV, Benfica and Villarreal.
