Unsurprisingly Channel Five have picked Fulham v Twente.
ESPN have second pick and have chosen PAOK v Spurs.
ITV have third pick and have chosen Birmingham City v Braga
ITV have fifth pick and have chosen Kiev v Stoke
Don't know what ESPN's fourth pick is.

Could it be the Celtic match if they are reinstated?

Makes you wonder, though, if Channel 5 would have preferred Atletico Madrid v Celtic to Fulham v Twente, but had to make their picks by today.

Certainly, it's a pretty decent fourth pick for ESPN if it comes to pass.

As others have stated, one would expect that ESPN have nominally selected Atletico Madrid v Sion, in the hope that by the time the games roll around it has become Atletico Madrid v Celtic. Even if Celtic aren't reinstated, it's still a decent pick given that Atletico are a high-profile La Liga side who won the competition in 2009/10.

I think Fulham v Twente is a strong first pick for Channel 5, which has just been given that little bit more added spice due to Bryan Ruiz's deadline day transfer between the clubs. And I'm sure no-one will be surprised if we see Steve McClaren joining Jim and Stan at Craven Cottage for their coverage.

But will it be Schteve McLaren or Steve McLaren?

If Celtic are not reinstated, would ESPN pick Shamrock as a 4th pick (even though its at 6:00pm, and up against Tottenham, and put it on another channel.) Or would they still pick a 8:05pm kickoff even if the match involved two foreign teams? (And yes I do know that Shamrock are from the Republic of Ireland and are therefore technically a foreign team anyway.)

Why on earth did FC Sion appeal? Did they have a reason to, that I don't know about? It wasn't just 1 player, it was 5 players!

I think they have forgotten one thing in this. Regardless of if its right or wrong in law, its UEFAs competition, UEFAs rules, and UEFA who make the decisions about if teams are allowed in the competition or not.

I haven't read the ins and outs but FC Sion claimed that their team sheets for bothe legs were cleared by UEFA initially, and claim the only reason they were kicked out afterwards is because FIFA pressured UEFA into doing so

FC Sion in my opinion should be charged with a frivolous appeal. They don't seem to me to have any valid basis for an appeal. There doesn't seem to be any new evidence.

With 3 clubs from the UK playing in the 6pm kick-off slot in MD2 will all the games involving Celtic, Fulham and Birmingham be shown in the UK or is it possible the one of the clubs will not be shown live since Five have opted for a 8.05 game and only ITV4 and ESPN shows games at 6pm?

I think you've answered your own question really! If there are three clubs kicking off at 6.00 and only two of the rights holders showing games at that time then who is there to show the third one? Unless it goes under red button, and I don't know about ITV4 but I'm pretty sure ESPN don't have a red button service.

ESPN have the rights from the 6th pick onwards. So i'm sure if they can it will go on Classic or America.

I doubt as a long shot they could do a regional optout?

An unfortunate situation which seems to have been caused by Five's* insistence on showing Spurs. I mean, I know *why* they chose to show them, but that match is extremely unlikely to be anything other than an embarrassingly easy home win, wherever the opposition come from.

*I still call them this out of solidarity with the previous owners

This is surely what will (or at least should) happen. ESPN UK moving clashing live football onto ESPN Classic or ESPN America is something that should have started happening a long time ago.

Failing that, should it come down to a (ROI) rights issue or ESPN's unwillingness to do this, perhaps on this occasion the sixth pick could default over to ITV who may put a further game on ITV3? I remember them using ITV3 for a Wales Rugby World Cup game four years ago when they were showing a UEFA Cup game on ITV4.

To be fair to Five (I preferred their previous ownership too) here, I think it owes more to their insistence on keeping a consistent 7.30-10.10pm timeslot, perhaps in part due to it making a handy lead-in to Big Brother.

I wouldn't write off Shamrock Rovers completely - I was expecting an embarrassingly easy home win for Partizan Belgrade when they played them last month, so you never know. And regardless of the fact they are an Irish club, that a side of Shamrock's stature have made it as far as they have in the Europa League makes the game a great story.

When you consider that in the 8.05pm timeslot their only other UK option was Stoke City v Besiktas - which IMO is not that much of an appealing game, despite there being quite a few well known players (Guti, Rustu Recber, Ricardo Quaresma, Hugo Almeida and Bebe) in the Black Eagles' ranks, due to how tarnished Turkish football has become this year - I think Five have made the right choice.

Have you seen the team Spurs have been putting out for the Europa League? When it comes to a channel's pick they are always going to go for the highest rated English club (if available for their time window) regardless of the opposition.

If they put a match on ESPN classic,it would be available to non-ESPN subscribers who take the news mix. Not sure if that would have any influence on things.
