I admit defeat, having studied the fixtures there is NOT a standout tie at that time

Fair play to you for that.

Celtic's matches could be annulled. A Swiss court has ordered UEFA to reinstate FC Sion into the group stage. There's no statement from UEFA yet but Swiss media reports say that Sion's six group matches would eventually be played between 18 December and 16 February... Sounds like an utter mess.

Be tough on the sides that have taken points from Celtic!

Might as well make the group 3 teams only maybe...and compenstate Cetic/Sion money wise.

If I were in the shoes of Atletico/Rennes/Udinese, I'd refuse to play the additional matches in the middle of winter. Of course UEFA would fine them but they could go to court and file a suit because of "distortion of competition"... This could become a neverending story.

UEFA will not be bound by a civil court. They've made that clear many times before.

Yes, I'm aware of Bosman but that was a completely different case.

I reckon there is more chance of UEFA kicking out all Swiss club and international teams out of competitions, than Sion getting back into the competition.

The fact that UEFA (and FIFA) have their headquarters in Switzerland could get in the way there... Swiss authorities might be tempted to reconsider UEFA's tax abatement.

They could just set-up in Luxembourg then instead.

Sion will not be re-instated. Celtic don't deserve to be in it either really (and I follow them!) but they'll probably finish bottom of the group.

UEFA have presented three scenarios for the possible reintegration of FC Sion. All of them sound quite bizarre to me...

#1 - Cancellation of all previous matches in Group I and formation of a group of 5 teams in the old UEFA Cup style

#2 - Integration of FC Sion as a fifth team into the current group

#3 - Integration of Sion into the round of 32, "following a qualifying play-off round still to be defined"

To be continued...

They have picked

Fulham v Wisla Krakow

Tottenham have lost and are 3rd in the group.

Stoke have won and are almost through.

Birmingham have drawn and are 3rd in the group.

Fulham won and are almost through.

Spurs should comfortably win their two remaining games though, and thus finish second behind Rubin.

Birmingham could struggle to beat Maribor, but aren't out of it yet.

Celtic are likely to drop back down to bottom of their group.

If Birmingham finish level on points with Bruges they go through

If they finish level with Braga they will go out

So they want Braga to beat Bruges

This assumes they lose in Portugal next time

Its worth pointing out that the 3rd placed teams from the champions league group stages drop down into the Europa League.

With the 5th matchdays in the champions league group stages this week (yesterday and today) we are now beginning to see a clearer picture of which teams from the champions league group stages might get into the Europa League last 32.

With regards to the English teams in the champions league group stages, Manchester City in group A, and Manchester United in group C have now played 5 matches each.

In group A Manchester City have to win their final group match. If they draw or lose they are out. But even if they win they still have to rely on the other result in the group. If Napoli win away against Villarreal, Manchester City will be out, otherwise Manchester City will be through. Manchester City are guaranteed at least though to be in the Europa League, and they can not win the group. But the overall important point is that it is not in Manchester Citys own hands.

In group C Manchester United have to draw or win to go through. If they lose they go out. They are at least guaranteed a place in the Europa League, and can win the group. To win the group they can either draw, and Benfica lose, or win, and hope Benfica draw or lose. If Manchester United and Benfica finish on the same points Benfica will top the group on head to head record. At least for Manchester United it is in their own hands and not reliant on the other result in the group.

Arsenal and Chelsea play their 5th champions league group stage match tonight in a few minutes.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Chelsea

The champions league matchday 5 group stage matches for Chelsea and Arsenal tonight are over.

Arsenal won the match and have got through winning the group.

Chelsea lost tonight, and are not through yet. If they win their final match against Valancia they go through, and if they lose they go out. If they draw its a bit more complicated. The first thing to say is even if Bayer Leverkusen lose against Genk they will still go through, i.e Bayer Leverkusen are through now. If Bayer Leverkusen lose a mini league table between Valancia, Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen will be the tiebreaker and I think Valancia will go through as they have scored more goals, and Chelsea will go out. If Bayer Leverkusen draw or win only the results for Chelsea and Valancia against each other will count for the tiebreaker. It was 1-1 in Valancia so if it is 0-0 Chelsea will go through, and if its 2-2 or higher Valancia will go through. If its 1-1 Valancia will go through as they have a better goal difference. Chelsea are at least guranteed to go through to the Europa League last 32, and it is in their own hands as to if they go through or not. As for winning the group Chelsea would have to win and hope that Bayer Leverkusen don't win.

Not a good night for the British teams or broadcasters!!

Birmingham lost away to Braga and barring a miracle are out.
Spurs lost at Home to PAOK and barring a miracle are out.
Celtic lost at home to Athletico Madrid and need an unlikely win away to Udinese in the next match to go through.

I'd expect Stoke to Qualify tomorrow night and Fulham will have control of their own destiny in the last match (even if they lose away to Twente tomorrow as I expect) so along with Man city (probably) there could be 3 English team in the last 32.

There's even the possibilty of Utd and Chelsea dropping into it but that's unlikely (or maybe not given Chelsea's recent form!)

I'd imagine ESPN, ITV and C5 will be hoping they can get into the last 16 and beyond!

Birmingham need Bruges to lose at home to a side who have qualified

Spurs (who appear quite happy to be out so they can concentrate on the League) need the Greeks who are through to beat the Russians AND also they need to score five in Ireland
